From the article...
"According to Matthias Mueller, CEO of Porsche AG, the German sports car maker is going to put at least one turbocharged flat-4 engine in the mid-cycle-updated 2017 Boxster and Cayman.
The most possible choice of the 4-cylinder engine will be the 2.0L unit which is currently used on the Macan CUV, delivering 233hp and 258 lb-ft of torque."
Thoughts on this?

If it's the standard Macan engine, I would expect a decent decrease in price or it will not sell. Who like turbo RWD cars anyways? Crappy throttle control and feel.
I do hope it would be lighter at least. If inexpensive it may be a good daily drive with awesome MPG.

unless they use the 2016 audi S3 292hp engine, and that replaces only the Cayman base model. That would be quite the upgrade actually, especially in the torque department. *fingers crossed*
There is absolutely no way that the base Boxster/Cayman see a HP decrease with the new turbo 4 engines. The motors will probably have modest HP increases, and exceptional torque increases. Oh, and the base prices will likely increase as well.....
Modern turbocharged engines aren't like things made even 5 years ago. 997TT throttle response is in a different league compared to 991TT performance. 4 cylinders has a negative connotation to luxury segment buyers in the US but not as much in Europe where smaller and diesel engines are the norm.
The truth is it will almost certainly be a lighter drivetrain package with more horsepower and loads more torque throughout the range. And it means that for 1000 buck ECU tune you'll probably pick up 50-75hp. Why are we complaining?
