Glad it is not the immobilizer - that is expensive and a PIA to get programmed. Didn’t really think it was the starter motor. The relay is a new one on me - haven’t see that reported as an issue. Do you have a PCA buddy with a 2002 Boxster S that would come to your place and swap relays? That way you know before you buy the part.

GOT IT GOT IT GOT IT!!!!!

2002 Porsche Boxster S Tiptronic will not start - CHECK THE TIPTRONIC GEAR SELECTOR - IT IS PLASTIC AND GETS BRITTLE AND EXPLODES.
The car is stuck in whatever gear you got stuck in.
If you think its the starter relay - wrong - it starts with jumped relay in gear if you left it in gear.
If you think its the immobilzer - thats a racket.
I replaced starter motor, alternator, ignition, relays - and it still would not start.

REASON: The plastic Tiptronic gear selector failed at 20 years.

If its this symptom - wont start. Everything everyone ever said did not work. Then ...
its this piece t the back of the car - you can change the gears with your hand into neutral and car runs perfectly. Just cant change gear but $23 fix easy.

Part# 996-426-035-00-OEM
$23 Pelican Parts

Porsche Auto Trans Shift Cable End

Thanks for listening - Im off to be happy.

Trying to remove old part - any idea how to remove this push on retainer on the end of the gear shift rod? Dont want to break things.

Ideas? Tools?

Use a small screwdriver or needle nose pliers and pry the tabs up until the retainer comes loose. Once it is off, use needle nose pliers to bend them back down so that when you reinstall, they will grab. From the parts diagram it looks like you could replace it with a circlip too.

Awesome - yes I ordered a needle nose sharp plier and a sharp screwdriver - Ill replace with 1/4 inch circlip for easier removal again. The plastic ball came off easy so should be a straight replacement with new part and done.

Time to replace the mufflers they are rusty and gross. What exhaust and headers you recommend? ebay?

For headers, Fabspeed is probably the most common choice. You have to be careful that headers have a good fit - not sure I would consider Fleabay for headers. Lots of other considerations for the muffler. You have to look at the amount of sound and if you are bothered by droning from the exhaust. I chose to install a Porsche Sport Exhaust (bought from Suncoast Porsche) on my 02S. The sound wasn’t quite as loud as I would have liked (but better than stock), but there was no droning (which was important to me). You can sometimes find used exhaust systems from people that have not been satisfied with their purchase.
