Engine Blown because.....
I finally picked up my Boxster from Pepe Porsche. The cause for the engine being blown was 'Broken Intermediate Shaft' which also caused metal being in the oil. Apparently Porsche never fixed that issue with the 986. I have a base 987 with a production date of 1/05.I'm not sure if there is a way to see if your engine is like mine with the Intermediate issue, but I recommend you find out from your dealer. Just to play safe...
This is only speculation, but I'm assuming 987 who's production date is earlier than 1/05 may have this issue. The dealer has replaced the engine and performed an alignment as well.

My cousin just purchased an '04 S and blew the motor a month ago. The shop told her it was an Variocam malfunction? THis sounds more likely. This is her second boxster and her second motor now.
