Unhappy Can someone in Ontario confirm- Re: Speeding Ticket

I recently got my first speeding ticket. It was in one of those school zones that are only active when the lights on the sign are flashing, and they were flashing. My mistake. So I got a ticket for 59km/h in a 40km/h zone.

At first I thought my insurance would go through the roof because kanetix says that speeding in a school zone is a major infraction, and thus a major insurance increase (equivalent to 2 or 3 minor incidents). However, it appears kanetix has that there for other provinces in Canada that have a separate offence for speeding in a school zone, evidently Ontario does not have that separate charge. As my ticket says, the offence is 59 in a 40 zone, no mention of school zones. The fine is not the community safety zone rate either, just the regular $2.50 per km/h over + $20.

So although I am very certain that this is just a minor insurance event in Ontario (and potentially major in other provinces), I just wanted to throw it out there to definitively confirm. Should I expect only a minor insurance increase, if any, next renewal?

Thanks.

Speeding Ticket

In Ontario, that is considered a minor speeding ticket. I am not too sure where you are from, but if you are in another province, you may want to see what the reciprical agreements are between the provinces. just because it is a minor offence in Ontario doesn't mean that your home province will see it the same way...

in Ontario, speeding is speeding. it would not be a separate offence for a school zone.

Thanks speedeamon, I was concerned about the insurance impact but it's good to know that it will just be considered minor.

And thanks Zookie, but I paid up on this one already.

You should have taken this matter to court. Speeding at a rate of 59 in 40 carries 3 demerit points as well. At the very least we could have saved you demerit points.

Most insurance companies offer a "conviction free discount". By paying the tiket you may loose this discount causing your insurance rates to increase.

It depends on your insurance company but 1 minor speeding ticket will probably not even affect your insurance at all. The insurance company will not be aware of it unless they randomly check or you switch insurance companies. I've had some speeding tickets with my latest insurance with no changes in premiums. Just make sure you're next one is in 3 years or so and you'll be fine. Actually my insurance company will allow 2 minor tickets with no penalties in a 3 year period.
