HAWK HPS pads, 5,000 mile report

Ok so it's been 5000 miles since I replaced the front rotors/pads. I went with OE Porsche rotors from sunset imports... and purchased HAWK HPS pads from tire rack.

I bedded the pads as detailed by HAWK. It was noisy and lacked power for the first couple miles but improved mile after mile after that... within days it was quiet and performed identically to the OE pads re: stopping power and may even be smoother with less "grabbiness".

After 5000 miles I've noticed that the rotors are a little bit scratched up. It seems that the rotors are probably a bit soft... and the pads are quite firm, hence the low dust and long life. At this point I'm not sure how long the rotors will last but we'll see.

DUST: what dust? Wheels look like I just washed them a week after the last wash.

Rears: I went with HAWK HPS pads and kept the original rotors. They were only about 40-50% worn so I thought they had another 25,000 miles on them. So far so good... again they were noisy at first and then calmed down and broke in just fine.

Depending on rotor life... I'll give them something between a B+ and A.

oh and btw, the brake job is easy. Truly a pleasure to save the $1000 in Porsche labor.

Removing the rear wheels took more time than replacing the rear pads...

I just replaced the rotors/pads on my 04 CTT...got a great deal on a set of slotted/drilled irotors ($400) and went with EBC yellowstuff pads...the combination is working like a charm..braking performance is absolutely excellent.

To help extend the life of rotors, I cryogenically treat (cryo-treat) my rotors. I use Cryo Science in Oceanside California. The last time I had them process my rotors, I was charged $25/rotor.

For expensive (two-piece) rotors, this is a must!

did you switch pads due to the low speed squeal? Only had the car a week but this squeal has absolutely got to go.

To limit the squealing, try giving the brakes a power wash with the garden hose. Every time I wash the Beast, I flood the caliper/rotor areas with a strong stream of water to clear out brake dust that has accumulated.

Works for me! The only thing I hear when I brake is my engine and exhaust!

The OEM pads/rotors on my '09 GTS squeek like crazy at low speeds (mainly when parking). It's incredibly annoying. I only have 2,500 miles on the car, so maybe they need to "break-in"?

I'm thinking about switching over to the Hawk pads to get rid of the brake noise as well as reduce the amount of brake dust. Dust collects on my wheels within 10-15 miles of driving....absolutely ridiculous!!!
