Effect of mods / upgrades on factory warranty?

I have an 05 Turbo on order, with an expected delivery date in October. What type of modifications can i make without voiding the warranty from the factory? For example, it makes sense that putting on 22" rims / tires would not void the warranty, but that replacing the exhaust or ECU might. Does anyone know for sure?

Getting Rims, Exhaust will not void your warranty

Thanks for the reply. Are there any guidelines as to how far you can go without voiding the factory warranty?

the warranty (in CA for sure) covers everything it is supposed to unless the problem can be attributed to the modifications. I.e., if you modify the ECU and the transmission goes - they have to prove that the added power contributed to the failure.

Having said that, last week's Autoweek had an excellent article on warranty issues. Said that dealers (and specifically Porsche) monitor boards, local clubs, and track events looking for participants "racing" their cars because that immediately voids the whole warranty

Im not sure of any guidelines. But upgrading your ecu chip might void your warranty, however some companies say their chips are undetectable so in other words it wont void your warranty. Getting an exhaust shouldnt be a problem at all

It would be best to get to know one of your service advisors well and then ask him. There are some that frown on any mods and then there are some that say go for it. What mod will void your warranty could vary from dealer to dealer.

Typically your local dealer doesn't really care about these mods. However, if there is any discrepancy with regard to where a particular service problem might have originated then the odds could change. Dealers gets paid on warranty work from PCNA and depending on the type of claim this is where one could run into trouble. There is no absolutes here and making the statement that replacing your factory wheels, exhaust, ECU won't effect your warranty is subjective. And yes, even wheels. I recently heard a story at the dealer about a customer who replaced his stock wheels on his GT3. Several months later the customer was complaining about brake fade and the car pulling to the right when applying the brakes. The dealer found multiple part failures, which resulted in a $6,000 claim with PCNA. The rep. refused the claim, as it was determined that the design of the aftermarket wheels would not allow the brakes to cool efficiently causing brake failure.
