To Buy or Not To Buy

Ok, so I know that a vehicle purchase is a personnel decision and is based on financial factors and the like, but feedback from others with similar tastes and interests can be beneficial. Here is my dilemma (if you can call it that). My wife and I bought a 06 Cayenne S last year. But, the birth of our first child, which reduced us to a single income and wonderful turn in the economy pushed us to exchange it for someting more economical. We got a CR-V. Don't get me wrong, the CR-V is a great vehicle. But, my DD is getting close to it's last leg and there is a 06 Cayenne S Titanium on a non-Porsche dealer lot for a good asking price. I'm sure I could talk it down considering the every changing state of gas prices. So the question is, do I try to negotiate a potentially fantastic price on a used Cayenne with low miles and risk the immediate increase in gas prices or wait to see if things stabilize before making any sort of vehicle purchase? Any and all comments are welcome.

BTW, paying for the gas isn't the relay a problem. It's just the psycological implact of seeing close to three digits on the pump once the tank is full.

buying a car shouldn't impact your survival.

Honestly, it's just that a car.
Save for your family, buy something more economical, lease a more expensive car, something else though.

Don't buy a car that is 40/50/60/70K+ if you have to even consider gas or 1 income when you really need 2, or the economy.

It could hurt you later, then if you ahve to sell the car you just bought, you will be even more upside down then, than you already are currently.

You can lease a very nice x5 for .9% interest anf get your payment to the low 600's if that is something you'd like...

FOr me it's a no brainer, don't get the car. Wait till you are more comfortable and then decide, don't do the what if scenario.

Base your decision on your current status/situation, not what "might" happen in the future...

might not be what you wanted to hear, but I'd wait to buy the Cayenne.... or if you are getting the itch to just buy something look into other options that are equally satisfying.

car is always a less priority, always, instead, put that money to a savings account for your child's college expenses...

Jace is right on!

Nobody should stretch to buy a high end car. It is a luxury to own it, not a necessity.

A lot of people are going to bash me for this one, but really go look at the touareg.. The technology is exactly the same- same air suspension, parking sensors, keyless start/entry system, tilting mirrors, heated seats, and ride for a fraction of the cost, same frame, same trailer hitch, same cd changer. The majority of the electronic parts on both cars are stamped "Porsche, vw, audi". The instructions for the trailer hitch comes with technique to remove your bumper for any of the three cars. You really do get a spectacural vehicle for a very affordable price. I had one and sold it because my dealer was terrible and sliced the leather on my door when replacing a switched and refused to pay for it or admit to it... I swore I would never own a VW again.

If you liked the ride and comfort qualities of the cayenne, you are not sacificing much other than price to get a VW. The name plate in the rear results in fewer compliments at the pump, but that is a rediculous reason to spend money you are stressed about.

I'm going to get bashed too... go to the back of any cayenne...
  • open the trunk/hatch
  • lift up the storage cover for the spare tire
  • look in the upper corner of the where you see body colored metal
  • carefully look at the stamping
  • it usually starts vw#################
but in terms of being car poor... don't do it....

All good points. Thanks for the feedback. Trust me, the last thing I will do is get into a situation with a car that puts me into a financial bind. I'm the type that nitpicks each purchase and goes through a justification process before just about every sale. My wife hates it when I go to the grocery store with her. Anyway, thanks again for the comments.
