This is a very common problem, mine are completely toast as well.
Replacement is very tricky as you have to drop part of the headliner.

I have not changed them yet, as I worry about damaging the headliner! But as you know, it is very annoying especially when loading the groceries etc.

Question:
Does anyone know how much the dealer charges for this?
Also, would it make sense to replace the working glass lifters at the same time while the headliner is already down?

I had to have mine done - don't remember the mileage, but my '04S is now at about 66k - sometime between 30k and now. I got them to warranty it, so don't know costs ...
