glass cleaning

Since I bought my 2006 CTT last week I've had great difficulty with visibility whenever the windshild is wet, especially at night. I suspect there is some type of wax or other product on the glass but it is remarkably resistant to removal. I've tried multiple cleanings with detergent, wax stripper, and numerous other cleaners. Someone recommended SOS pads but I am concerned about scratching the glass. Any suggestions or products to try??

Soft scrub works well, as does lacquer thinner - just watch the paint.

I have always applied several coats of Rain-X, cleans everything off the windshield and never use wipers, I apply once a month - 2 coats then buff off

Exactly! Rain-X is great stuff! I even buy for the interior anti-fog wipes!

Old fashioned Bon-Ami soap bars do wonders, if you can find them. They contain pumice, which abrasively cleans and polishes the glass surface without damaging it. Zaino also has a very good glass polish that both cleans and removes fine scratches. It really works well. See here:

I would bet that Meguiars has something similar.

Recommend rain-x as well - Great product. It's essentially a wax for glass that fills in the micro perforations/scratches that accumulate over years of driving and using the wipers.

After a single application water on the glass starts to bead up and whisk away when driving at speed without even using the wipers.

you can use scotch brite or those plastic brillo pads, AND if it's not cold outside, or if you have a heated garage use some HOT water (not boiling but tap hot) with a bit of dawn dish soap - if you have a waxy substance on there the warm/hot water will help break it down, warm it up enough to come off...

Even using light steel wool should not scuff the outside of your glass, test it in a small area if you are concerned about it.

Then use whatever you see fit - I don't like rain-x personally I choose to just get the glass as clean as possible and then keep it clean.

If you guys like Rain-X, try the Aquapel product. It's better. It goes on and comes off easier, and lasts easily 4x as long.

Aquapel® Glass Treatment uses technology innovated for the aviation industry by PPG Industries, leaders in glass technology. When applied to a vehicle windshield, this product improves vision in the rain, day and night. Aquapel forms a chemical bond with glass unlike other products that simply coat glass to increase water repellency, causing it to bead and easily shed off the glass. As a result, Aquapel can last up to 6 times longer than other products. Each box contains one applicator and one treatment can last for months!
Additionally, Aquapel Glass Treatment remains highly effective after months of normal use, including driving in rain and snow, car washing, and glass cleaning.
Whenever it’s time to renew your long-lasting Aquapel Glass Treatment, its performance can be restored in just minutes with another application (one per box). Once you’ve driven with Aquapel Glass Treatment, you won’t want to drive without it.

There's no way I would take scotch-brite pads or steel wool to glass. I just now took both to an old drinking glass to see, and both scratched it.

you don't actually think that your windshield glass and an old drinking glass are the same quality glass do you?

I personally have done this on almost EVERY car I've owned including the CTT because sometimes there is just no other way to get tree sap or 90mph bug splats off...

believe me it's not something i do every chance i get but it certainly does not scratch or dull the glass at all..

Not sure why anyone would be down on rain-x.

Keeping glass clean and coating it with a wax/polymer are two totally different things.

No one debates about washing and cleaning a car thoroughly and then subsequently waxing it. Why is rain-X any different.

Clean the glass, then seal it with rain-x.

Because it's glass and you're looking through it, not at it?

Rain-X sucks, use Aquapel or Klasse AIO with a spray of Duragloss AW after. Blows crappy Rain-X away. Klasse AIO is great as it's a chemical cleaner for paint but works excellent on glass as well. Plenty of reports of how fogged up Rain-X gets even if applied correctly, I know as it happened on a few of our vehicles and one time at night which was horrible, and I know how to apply it, I detail all our vehicles with boutique products. No matter what I tried it still fogged up a few times, now use Aquapel or Klasse and AW with no problems, last longer, and no wiper chatter.
