Test Drive - could have been more impressed
How many miles are on your X5? I think for any vehicle less than 50K, that's a moot point. And if you just search for HPFP, there are tons of threads complaining about the BMW - obviously none of your BMWs listed have turbos.
I'm sure there'll be magazine comparison tests of X5 vs. Cayenne driven on the track in the coming months.

[QUOTE=Matrix;3007127] Also 90k for an S? You can get a turbo for close to that.
No you can't. The base msrp is $105 and with any options at all you are at or over $110 and on your way to $115 or $120.

Did you read what you quoted? $105 is close to 90k, and who ever pays msrp. You can get that base turbo down to $90-95k if you have any skills. Also isn't most of the options on the S standard on the Turbo?
The computer and internet is a car dealerships worst nightmare.

I'll buy every new 2011 Cayenne Turbo you can find me for $90 grand. And, some options are stock on the turbo but most of the good ones are not.

Jen it really comes down to what you are looking for from a car. I test drove both the 2011 cayenne turbo and the BMW 50 and M of the X's.
For me it was night and day for what I want in a car. Fit and finishes are different, capabilities are different, as well as almost everything including price
I prices out an S and I came to $105k for what I'd want, on the turbo I am spending $129k. with the x5 M fully optioned I was at $97k and the 50 at about $89k.
Opted for the optioned turbo with the options I wanted/ needed from a vehicle.

Jen, although I would love to tell you to go for the Cayenne, I am going to tell you to wait. It is better to buy no car than to get the wrong car for the wrong reasons. You should not second guess yourself or if the $$$ amount is evoking even a little bit of financial stress type sentiment, then it is not worth it. I hope you don't mind that piece of advice from me. Oh BTW, when I was typing this reply, the 2011 Cayenne ad was playing on TV during the Phillies/Giants baseball game. What does that tell ya
One must also consider the superior status of buying the Porsche brand and thus the premium price.
The BMW brand obviously does not offer the same status as the Porsche and subsequently compensates by offering a cheaper product

Had a CTT on order and cancelled it and got a X6 instead. Here are the reasons I switched:
- Personally I find the new Cayenne body style to be quite dull. Much as I tried to like it - and believe me I did try - I could not. Quite honestly it is extremely generic looking from the rear. They have also softened the lines to the point that it looks wimpy. Just compare the new Cayenne with the old GTS and you'll get my point. I opted for the X6 because love or hate it, it's far more unique and it evokes a reaction (be it "what were you thinking
or "cool car") versus a yawn.
- This one is a biggie for me: Porsche electronics are IMHO behind BMW's. For example, I can send Google map directions from my computer to my car (very useful). Bluetooth works flawlessly (In my wife's '09 GTS her iphone constantly cuts out on her, in addition her radio comes on every time she turns on the car, and randomly after she has muted it). Things such as time shift replay on Sat Radio, an excellent Heads up display, side view cameras, Top view cameras, and the much improved iDrive make PCM look/feel lacking. On the plus side for Porsche, the Burmeister stereo is epic and BMW has nothing that can compare.
- Yes the CTT is fast, but somehow it doesn't feel as fast as it should i.e. there is not that sense of acceleration that one would expect. In addition, for me it quite honestly it doesn't feel as planted as an X6. I would love to hear the opinion of other folks who have driven both the Cayenne and the X6.
- The new Porsche interior is superior to the BMWs (with the caveat that you have to like lots of buttons). However, none of the Porsche seats come close to the comfort provided by the BMW multi-contour seats. Add the Active Seat that massages your rear end on long journeys, and you are in seating bliss
- Porsches absolutely screws its customers on options. $700+ dollars to get the sideview mirrors fully painted? $1500+ for running boards, $1000+ for roof rails... Really? It is one thing paying for exclusivity, it is another thing getting robbed.
For those who speak of exclusivity, I personally don't see a significant difference between Porsche and BMW. Ultimately they are both mass produced luxury cars. If you are simply choosing one over the other because of perceived "exclusivity", then I think that is a mistake.

I don't know about the US market, but Porsche has always been an exclusive product here in Australia and has been marketed accordingly.
The exclusivity aspect is paramount in this market segment and Porsche leads here when compared to Mercedes, BMW and Audi. (in that order).
Here is a list of new car prices in Australia for the Porsche and BMW brands. (Recommend retail prices with base inclusions)
Cayenne S - $148,000
Cayenne Turbo - $240,000
In comparison the BMWs are priced as follows:
X6 - $148,000
X6M - $184,000
The US and Australian dollar are now at parity.
What are you guys in the US paying for these vehicles?

Few BMWs so far are equipped with turbo V8. Am I going to bet my money on such vehicles' reliability? No. I6 is BMW's bread and butter but add on turbos and many problems arise.
You all make great points, but what it boils down for me is what I want to drive daily. Money is not an issue, but I do want the most bang for my $$$. I am going to go and drive both again, back to back this time. I probably just need to walk away for a while and then start all over again. I am keeping this vehicle long term, ie, 5 years or more. It will be the X5M vs. Cayenne S for me. Same MSRP, 93k. I have a great deal waiting on the X5M and now I will need to great a great deal on an ordered Cayenne S. I am trading my 997, so both trade-in values are on the spot. True, I don't have to buy anything right now, so I can wait. I have never waited this long or pondered buying my next car!!!!
