DIY rear rotors

So. I have my calipers off, but I can't for the life of me get my rear rotors off.

I did read in the manual that you might have to release tension from the parking break. The manual i have is very vague. It shows the general area of where this adjustment is, but doesn't have a picture or clear instructions on how to use this adjustment.

It says, "modify the adjustment device until wheel can no longer turn, then unscrew 6 teeth"

Wtf does this mean? Does anyone have a picture of the hub with the rotor off so I can see what this 'adjustment device' looks like?

here's a pic I am going by. I can't seem to see any adjustment mechanism in the area that is depicted here

Thanks in advance

Jt

That's to adjust the parking brake so it works, not to release it..

You do have the parking brake off right? I'm sure you do.. if not that's a quick answer.

What happens if people forget to release the parking brake and drive with it on is the inside of the rotor (which is a little drum just like old fashioned brakes used) gets worn and the brake shoes won't clear it without turning the adjuster all the way in.

DISCLAIMER: I haven't had the Porsche apart, I've done lots of other cars and BMWs - the adjusters are usually the same type.. aind it sounds like what they're describing.

The adjuster likely looks something like:

The teeth referred to are on the wheel adjuster. The center portion has threads that expand the screwed in bits when turned one way, and retract them when turned the other way. The screwed in bits push out the brake shoes at one end (the other end is usually on a pivot of some sort.)

It could look similar to:

Your goal if you choose to accept it - is to turn it in the direction where the screwed in bits retract, making the diameter of the shoes smaller, and allowing them to clear the lip on the inside of the drum (that is part of the rotor.) It appears Porsche (from the image you showed) has an access port in the drum part of the rotor. You have to rotate the drum/rotor until the adjusting wheel shows up in the port. Then you'll have to figure out which way is in and which way is out (and it may be the opposite on the other side..) Usually a screwdriver is used to rotate the adjuster by prying against the teeth..

Good luck!

thanks for your reply.

I DO have the parking brake off. first thing i checked lol. The manual does mention that if the rotor won't come free, to try adjusting the parking brake.

Ive adjusted the parking brake on my fcar before, and it looked exactly like what you have pictured there. I CAN'T for the life of me find a gear like that on the cayenne. the manual says that its located at approx 9 oclock to the right or 3 oclock to the left; just as pictured. Maybe i just need better light/eyes

Loutorious is infamous around these parts
Mine was seized up real bad, especially the front rotor. If all else fail, I'd say whack it with a sledge hammer or something. I used a earth stomper, front needed a good 5-8 whacks, rear about 3. East coast weather is probably the culprit. This may be the problem if you had not changed the rotors for years in Boston weather. Try at your own risk...

Maybe you already finished this project, but for anyone also looking for info I can offer a few answers. You can get to the parking brake adjusters through the access screw hole. It takes a rather small M5 bit (5mm triple square?) to loosen this screw. Use some penetrating oil and whack it with a hammer to loosen a stuck one. With the screw out you can look through and see the adjuster at the back (3 o'clock position). Turn the adjuster to shorten, releasing brake shoes. This my mean turning opposite way on left and right side. New rotors don't come with the access screw so you can reuse the one you took out. Don't forget to re adjust the parking brake when done.
