CTT Rear Diff, How hot is it supposed to get?

I have noticed that my rear diff gets very hot after a long drive. Nothing around it is hot except the two exhaust pipes.

When I say hot I mean that I am not able to hold my finger on it for more than 1/2 a second or so. I would guess 160-200°

Will someone with a CTT please do me a huge favor and check the temp on your rear diff after a long drive? (1hr+)

Just a finger touch would be fine to let me know if I am even in the ballpark

How many miles on your CTT?

Differentials tend to get pretty hot. Especially when the gears are fairly new. I have done gear swaps on Jeeps for years and durning break in the Diffs get way too hot to touch. They eventually start running cooler, but still very warm to the touch after highway driving.

This is why you will see trucks with finned aluminum rear differential covers to hold more fluid and keep hel keep temps down.
