Anyone replace a front half shaft? Ripped CV Boot

I was under my 05 Cs this weekend replacing pad and I noticed my LF inner CV boot was ripped. There was still grease in it, but some had spun out already. No noise, no sign of failure, just a ripped boot. Has anyone here pulled a Cayenne half shaft before? Is it:

> Tie rod / lower ball joint disconnect
> Shaft nut and then push (as in - bang with a sledge while the nut is on but cracked loose) the axel through the outer hub
> swing the suspension assembly out of the way
> Unbolt shaft from trany
> Remove shaft, replace boot (using cone method) or entire shaft
> Reassemble

Did I miss a step? Will I have to pound the #*&$^^@# out of the outer end of the axel shaft to get the shaft lose from the hub? Will I need a special press? Will the trany fluid drain when I unbolt the inner axel?

If the pita factor is too high I will just bring it to my buddies shop.
It sucks that a $5 rubber boot can be such a ***** to get at !!! Where is a universal "replace on car" boot when you need one !
