Car Fax
You can actually run one yourself on the carfax website. You can pay for an individual report, or buy a one month unlimited subscription. This could be very handy when car shopping.
It's more then likely this forum, as many others do, has a rule against offering or asking for a "free carfax".. Carfax and AutoCheck are somewhat diligent in scouring websites looking for this sort of post, and then contacting the hosting company with threat of legal action. It seems as if they feel this might be a violation of their terms of service, and that you are asking someone to suborn an illegal act.
Go figure. It's like they're in business to make money.
Hosting companies don't like this. Most forums I frequent (and some I moderate on) issue infractions, or outright ban the people making these posts.
As someone thinking of buying a $20k+ used vehicle, spending $30 for a CarFax - if you believe it has any value - doesn't seem like an unreasonable thing to do.
That said - I have seen just how useless these reports are. On a vehicle I know all about - which has had several not-at-fault accidents (so no police report was made) - there are no records of the accidents or damage on both CarFax and AutoCheck. It comes back as perfectly clean. Another vehicle that had very obvious signs of flood damage (like salt-water sloshing around in the spare-tire well) - also came back clean.
I wouldn't bother paying for one. If a dealer offers one, I'd look at it, but take it with a grain of salt. IMHO they are just about useless. The vaunted guarantee they offer is useless - all it guarantees is that IF an accident/title-flaw is reported to them, they will show it. They disclaim any liability for unreported incidents.
YMMV, but not a whole bunch.

I agree, the carfax, auto check, etc should not even be close to the only tool used when shopping for used cars...sometimes they can be pretty much useless. When I was shopping for my ctt I would really only use the carfax as a preliminary check to see the overall picture of the car. Where was it owned, how many owners, etc.
Some of the ctt's i was looking at had over 15 detailed service records right on the car FAX showing the name of the porsche dealer and even what services were done (while others had just 2-3). If an accident or some strange title issue (salvage, rebuilt, etc) I would automatically rule that one out. I'm sure they don't catch everything but if there is something bad on there you can be pretty sure that something did happen. After weeding out the ones I was looking at I finally had a ppi done on the one I thought was best..worked out great for me

Rollback
i always use this type of service and it saved me. I was very close to buying a vehicle and I did a check and found the cars odometer had been rolled back about 80 to 90 thousand kilometers!
This was a car being sold in Vancouver, BC, but the (buyer did not disclose) history showed mileage counts over the years from Quebec, and the cars odometer had been rolled way back from the numbers reported. (and also Quebec is a tough place on vehicles due to the salt and snow many months each year)
so a well spent $20 or whatever

I'd worry more about a clean carfax than one that shows an accident.
LOTS of ways for a car to have a clean carfax history but have had major surgery done!
I there is an accident that has beer exported and repaired propery then you know to look for it. The scammers are also trying to avoid cars with "dirty" carfaxes. Much easier to pass a hacked car off if the carfax is clean!
As an example:
I just parts out a wrecked VW Eurovan I bought to get some parts off of. Van was totally destroyed but had a clean title and title history because it wasn't insured by the guy the put it in the ditch. I then did major engine surgery on a second Eurovan before cutting a giant 8' hole in the roof to install the Poptop I took off the first van. I've had this van TOTALLY apart and cut up major body panels, but none of that will ever show up on carfax

Although, in this case you might notice that the title says GLS and it has a "Weekender" Poptop that actually adds value!
