How Critical is the Purge Evaporative Cannister?
When I drive sedately around town, my engine light comes on. Error Code #141 (I think) says my purge cannister needs replacing. When I open her up and especially after driving the highway, the light goes off.
QUESTIONS:
What effect might this be having on my engine?
On fuel mileage?
On performance? [I don't detect a problem but when I hit her hard the rear view gets hazy as I dump and clear the junk out of my turbos.
And how important it is I change that part?
Thanks in Advance

It is critical enough that if it goes bad you will have a hard time starting your car especially after you put gas into the car (fill ups). First hand experience confirmed by others. Wrote DIY to replace on here and rennrech. Not hard, but needs patience.
Dr. Kent?
I'll assume that it's the canister purge valve we're talking about. It will have no effect on your engine. It may affect fuel mileage to a minor degree, and it won't cause a noticeable change to performance.
The primary purpose for the whole canister/purge system is emissions related. It takes the fuel vapors that evaporate out of the fuel tank, and sends them back to the engine. As ciaka said, it can cause a hard start after you've released pressure from the fuel tank (such as when fueling up), but not always. The purge valve is not super expensive, so it may be worth it to you just to lose the check engine light.

If you're talking about error code #P0441, for under $100 I'd replace the valve. It's under the driver's side coils, should be a relatively straight forward removal and install. Hope this helps...
