Weird fluctuation on temp gauge?

I'm taking about the temp gauge to the left of the gas gauge. I have an 06 CS with about 1200 miles and I've noticed that when I drive it for a while (after like 30 minutes), the gauge starts the fluctuate a little. Its usually at the center (where I assume its suppose to be under normal conditions) but it will sometimes slide a little over to the right (above the center). It moves about the width of the needle to the right. It usually happens when I'm at a stop during rush hour, though it has also happened when I'm driving normally on the freeway. After the needle is above the center line, it will usually go back down to the center within minutes (sometimes seconds) but it also goes back to being above the line again within minutes (sometimes seconds) and so on... seems to happen too often for it to be "normal". Fortunately, the needle has never been much above than the width of the needle but I'm still concerned that it fluctuates so much and so often. Anyone else has this problem?

i get this on my beater car too. not sure why. you may want to check the oil and coolant level just in case

Hello, I see this from time to time on these cars. The problem: Some cars (not Porsches) actually have the DME send the instrument cluster a dummy signal as to where the temp gauge should be, when in reality the temp does fluctuate a little under normal conditions. I would say unless this fluctuation is more like from second hash mark to fourth hash mark, everything is normal.

I just got my 05 CTT with exact same issue. Anyone know what's going on?

OP did you ever figure it out?

My 06S does this but couldn't figure out why. It never happened to me before until recently.

Some people advise a water pump could be going or thermostat. Maybe as a preventative maint, I will change both out

Probably normal. May just be the fans kicking in. Mine dose this too. Were talking just a needles width increase past center right?

My 2004 CS doesn't fluctuate very much. It might go up a little bit on a very hot day if I'm in stop-and-go traffic, but that's about it.

Exactly. I recently noticed this while I was on a highway in the middle of traffic. This shouldn't be an issue until this thing keeps on climbing up. hilarious

Sorry to bump an old thread but I am seeing the same thing on my 06 turbo s. Did anyone figure out if it is a water pump or thermostat or is it just a bad signal?

Thanks for bumping this. At the time I posted this, I thought it had to do with hot temperature but it doesn't seem like it has anything to do with outside temperature. Mine has gotten slightly worse where it moves about 1.5~2 needle widths. When I posted this, I think I saw about 1 needle width at the time.

Is your car actually getting hot or do you think it is just a sensor going bad?

Let me bump this real quick...

What about when you are accelerating, ( on boost ) and the temp gauge starts fluctuating to the left ( as cooler side ) ??? then you let off the pedal and get back to normal ?? anyone has ever experienced that??
