New '08 Cayenne Turbo Owner - First Impressions

The '08 Cayenne is an incredible improvement over the '03-'06. The car is tighter, quieter and the build-quality just seems to be higher ....can't really put my finger on it but it just seems so. Kind of like when you drive any special car after you've just spent 2 days detailing it, it seems to handle better and a bit quicker.
The view of my Basalt Black Cayenne Turbo from the front and from the rear is stunning. It's more squared off .... the sides just drop straight to the ground instead of curving under like the '03-'06. And all the detail in the front & rear valances is great. The car looks more aggressive. I have Sport seats, so in the front-on view the tops of the seats flare out wider than the side bolsters, giving it a unique, purposeful look.
The CTT's Sport option is very aggressive! Cruising in 2nd gear, for example, at 2,000 rpms, then without changing the pressure on the gas pedal and punching the Sport button, it instantly jumps to 2300 rpm and you get a kick in the small of the back.
WOT in Sport is incredible. I haven't measured it with my G-Tech yet, but factory claims of 4.9 sec 0-60 are very believable and may even be conservative. I have never known Porsche to exaggerate 0-60 times ..... they are always conservative, seems they want almost everyone to get their published times if they can chew gum and shift at the same time.
I have the PCBB option. Wow! Handling in the curves is very impressive .... use of the term "truck" is inappropriate.
The 21" Sport wheel is gorgeous. I'm a wheel critic, have never hesitated to change wheels if I felt the need. No need here ... they are beautiful, they also have enough spoke depth that when you slowly turn into a parking spot at a Starbucks, they have a lot of curves and profile that catch light from the side as it turns. It's a gorgeous wheel. People have noticed and commented.
In my block I have neighbors with a Ferrari F430, A Mercedes CLS, a Ferrari 348 Speciale, and a Mercedes SL 55. All of these guys have wandered over when I'm washing the CTT and just stare at the car. They say "Nice car!" etc, etc ..... but then don't leave, they just stand there, walk around the car and watch me wash it. It apparently has that much impact for these car guys.
I am a huge fan of the full leather interior, mine is the Chestnut Brown Natural Leather. A fabulous combination with Black, but would also be stunning with white or silver. An entire herd must have been used for this car ..... do the PETA people wear leather shoes or are they going to picket my house if they find out?
On Friday my daughter was home from school and drove it around town for a couple of hours. When she got home she said, "Wow, people notice this car!" Of course, she's an attractive blonde. But since she normally drives a Brilliant Red Audi S4, she should be used to the looks so I guess she must have noticed some increase in attention.
I did make a change in my exhaust. There is a specialty exhaust shop nearby that I've used for some of my other cars (and my kids' Audis) that I trust. They are good pipe-benders and welders and understand exhaust flow very well. They understand that you can't mess with the Cats and that you still need enough back-pressure so you don't burble on throttle lift & sound like a rice-rocket going pop-pop-pop. I took the CTT there on the 3rd morning and we removed the stock muffler and replaced it with two small Magnaflow mufflers, then piped them so that we could retain the existng bolt-on dual tips (which look great, by the way). Because you can still see the mufflers through the ports in the rear valance, we used the highly-polished stainless steel version of the Magnaflows.
I'm very pleased with the improved sound. No raspiness. Much deeper, richer baritone note. In Sport with WOT, the car growls and you can hear the turbos spool up ..... they were silent before the change to the smaller mufflers. At idle and in parking lot maneuvers, the sound is great, sounds like the big V8 that it is.
Probably a small HP increase due to more efficient throughput.... 5-10 HP, most likely.
At first, I was a little concerned that it was almost too loud. But I've run it easy and hard through an empty parking garage with the top open and all the windows down and I am comfortable that it's just right. Plus, the acid test, my wife hasn't mentioned anything about it. She was going to the market the other day and I asked her to take it so I could hear it drive away (in non-Sport, I'm sure). It was awesome. Also, when driving it in non-Sport .... you don't hear the turbos spool up.
I don't have any sound clips, probably don't have the time to make any (sorry) but I highly recommend the exhaust mod. It was $525 at my local exhaust magician. You want to find the place in your city that does exhaust mods for the local Corvette club guys, I would think.
The only other mods I plan to make are visual. Would like to add the aluminum roof rails, but we have not yet figured if they will work with my Panaoramic roof (GREAT option!!!!). They should fit into the tracks, but may be too wide and interfere with the moving glass. The order guide says you can't get the rails with the Pano roof. I'll just have to order a set and try it, I guess.
I will also order the front and rear stainless steel skid plates when they become available ... so far they aren't in the parts system yet, I'll check with Gert at Carnewal to see if they're available in Europe yet.
I haven't taken any photos yet, but this car is identical to the Basalt Black/Chestnut Turbo in the '08 Cayenne brochure.
Hope this helps. All in all, an awesome vehicle.

I give you "two thumbs up" for your review.
I'm gonna wait for the CTT S version or something similar before I buy a third Cayenne.
Any experience with tire wear for you '08 owners? I am hoping for better results with the new evolution of this vehicle.

I dont think so... I think these tires last 10,000 miles Originally Posted by CamNeelyphile

Great write up, and thanks for taking the time to do so.
I test drove and '08 CTT likes yours with my family recently (3 kids & wife), and they also noted the significantly improved build quality and ambience. Even though the interior is the same as our '04 CTT. Just can't put my finger on it.
The ride was phenomenal. We have ~ 47,000 miles on our current TT, and the difference is appreciable.
We are strongly considering the '08, and your write legitimizes our thoughts.
Thnx,

someone who also owns an 05 cayenne said the interior of the 08 seems "tighter" less creeks and noises... just feels and looks a little more well built...
That would be me, I started this thread with my review a couple of weeks ago.someone who also owns an 05 cayenne said the interior of the 08 seems "tighter" less creeks and noises... just feels and looks a little more well built...
I re-affirm what I wrote, the build quality is perceptably better, although I still can't quite put my finger on why.
my father got an 08 turbo and says it's a huge improvement to his 04 CTT. He said especially in the suspension and ride.
I am debating going back to a CTT but just cant seem to justify spending the money on a new model without any Interior changes. I've had one already and going back to the same interior doesn't intrigue me too much.
But it would be nice to have all P Cars in the stable!

One question.
Do you know if the facelifted cayenne's exhaust system is identical to the previous gen cayenne? Meaning, can i buy an exhaust system for the previous gen and put it on the new one.

I don't believe it will work with the redesigned rear bar due to where the exhaust exits. I could be wrong though!Originally Posted by ChronoJ1

Turbos, by definition, burn oil. My 911TT used about a quart every thousand miles. The CTT owners manual predicts about the same. I've got about 750 miles and checked the oil on Saturday and it's down about half way between the 2 dots. Need to look it up and see what volume the difference between the marks is.
Not sure whether i should mention this, but i am led to believe there is a TI relating to excessive oil consuption. There was a TI for an oil vapour valve (at least, here in Australia), which was then changed to turbo hose clamps on the left side. I have been told recently that the oil consumption problem, at least on some cars, is due to incorrect oil control rings being fitted.Originally Posted by CAPTLST
