There's some negative reviews of the 6 online if you search. In a nutshell they say the VW source engine isn't smooth at mid to high RPMs. Also went on to say that the 6 in the Panamera is far better but when they started designing the first gen Cayenne Porsche signed an agreement with VW to source their petrol V6's only from VW. So... now Porsche has their own V6 in the Panamera but a VW V6 in the Cayenne.
I'm currently shopping for a Cayenne for the wife. I had her test drive the 6 and she thought it was a slow. I didn't drive it myself but saw the questionable reviews online. So... now we're reluctantly looking at the 8 cylinder which is going to cost another 10-15k.
Hate to provide negative info, but that's our limited experience to-date.
Good luck regardless,
Bob

"At first glance, this overlap in V6s seems like some product planner's ***** up, but Porsche says there is a solid rationale at work. The Cayenne's V6 engine came from VW, part of the Porsche and VW agreement to share the development costs of the sport-utility that became the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. It's a narrow-angle engine with undersquare cylinders, so it proved too tall and skinny to fit under the low, sleek hood of the 2011 Porsche Panamera."
