Looks like I am not the only one got "I don't care" treatment from Power Porsche Newport Beach. Went there to look & test drive the Cayenne in person. Operator paged for a sales, and waited for about 10 minutes for the sales to show up. Explained to the sales it will be my first Porsche and would like to test drive the car. Not much ethusiasm from the sales and was told no car was available for test drive for another 1-2 months if I don't want to wait, I could go to another Porsche dealer for the test drive and come back to place the order with him....Hm, Ok.....
This is why I don't like to deal with them in person. So when I was shopping for the Cayenne, I went to internet sales instead. Here are some of my experiences not in particular order:

1. Beverly Hills Porsche- One of the fastest and lowest quote replied.
2. McKenna Porsche- typical sales guy approach, I want a 2012 White Cayenne V6, not a 2011 black CS, overpriced left overs.....Damn it!
3. Rusnak Porsche/ Circle Porsche/ The Auto Gallery/- No cars available, so no discount available.
4. Walter's Porsche- $500 off for this rare beauty!
5. Pacific Porsche- Was offer for no discount at beginning, but after couple e-mails exchange, was able to match with the lowest quote.
So I ended up purchase the car from Pacific Porsche. The overall purchase experience was easy, fast without any typical sales craps. Now I will see how is the AFTER sale experience/ service from this particular one.

Speaking of McKenna, I do have something negative to say about them. I called them to ask if they had a certain model / color in stock. The guy on the phone (when they paged for sales) was really pushy and asked for a lot of personal info. Ok, that's understood. I told him that I am calling around for inventory updates and will get back to him. He chuckled and we ended the conversation.

The next week, he called 2-3 times leaving me messages about me inquiring about the car from his dealership. He never asked my permission to telemarket me. And this made me feel like a fool, since he had my first / last name and phone number from his caller ID all along while he was asking for it. Then the gall of him to keep calling my house when he never had my ok to do so. Typical "hard sales" approach. BTW, I didn't get the car from them.

Buyer beware - *69 to block your caller ID info before calling McKenna

I cant believe how arrogant some of these sales guys act...come on...they are SELLING the cars! I really love it when they act like they are Porsche factory team drivers...going on and on about how they went to "this circuit and tracked this car" blah blah. Some of the sales guys get it...and a lot don't.

As it relates to this post, I have found you will rarely get a discount on the phone or via email just because you ask for one. However, if you go into the dealer....checkbook in hand...and show them you are really in a position to make the deal, they will work with you.

Hoehn Porsche : is by far the best buying experience I have had of any model car. I bought my first porsche from them an 09 C2S and have bought 2 other porsches at other dealerships. But I still get them serviced from them and pop in at times just to chat and see what is new. They treat me as family and just love to stand around and talk about cars like real car enthusiast. They never put any pressure to buy. If they had more inventory than they would be able to give better discounts. I can only vouch for the following sales people there which you will most likely have a great experience with:

Sean Conner or Tom Brown - managers
Roger or Chris - sales associates

DTLA porsche : Can usually give you the best discounts and probably has the biggest inventory. I would recommend only dealing with Kenny the Sales mgr, I had a very negative experience dealing with the internet sales guy who totally f'ed up my purchase of the CTT. I got an 8% discount on it though and thus put up with the crap. The sales guy was suspended for a few months after messing up with me so badly.

Mckenna Porsche : Refused to let me test drive a TTS because I look young. Even though I was ready to buy. Another time I called and spoke to someone asking for a lease quote on a PTT that they had as a demo sale. The guy never called me back with a quote.

I agree that they need to make a decent profit but the experience should not be so negative. I also understand that buyers playing games irritates them.
Good idea for a thread.

I never provided my info to him . He is like that creepy guy that locks in a phone number from caller ID and keeps calling a girl without her consent.

csufl: So you were the guy who picked up that white V6. Our sales guy Mina was giving me some BS about the white having markup due to the color key being lost in Japan earth quake. I stopped him right there before he makes a fool of himself. We were there for the meteor grey so I didn't want to even go into that discussion.

Hi Steph,
I did picked up a white Cayenne from Pacific Porsche, but I wasn't sure which Metero Grey you were referring to.... the CTT?
Mina did mentioned something about the white color is difficult to get now or something, but I guess I was too excited to drive my car home....So I wonder what he said... hehe
How was your experinece with him?

They are afraid that when you say so-and-so gave this much off and if you can beat it, you got a deal. Then take that new price and go back to the original dealer and ask him to be that. It goes back-and-fourth until you get the best deal and they make the least commission. Good news for buyers, bad news for sales people.

So they usually draw a line (especially for low inventory / high demand models) and tell you to just go buy somewhere else if so-and-so gave you that deal. B/C they don't want a price war. And with the influx of calls they get everyday asking them to price-match or beat with empty promises and no-shows after they beat it, they get fed up. It's human nature and I do understand where they are coming from as well.

I think if you have successfully dealt with a salesperson before, or have previously purchased a vehicle from that dealership, they can see that you may be serious when you say "if you beat that price, I'll go with you." But if it's just a random call, they feel there is no sincerity when we imply that we have chose them as our last and final bargaining attempt.

And I think if it really was your last bargaining attempt and you really do want to finalize it with a certain dealer, go there and tell them that in person with checkbook in hand. That shows more commitment from us that we'll cut a check right then and there if he / she can beat it. My .02
I agree with you to an extent at the end of the day they are in it to make money. It's a free market and the laws of supply and demand will determine market price.

With that said I agree that going back and forth and back and forth is pretty messed up. Very few people wake up one day and say I'm gonna get a Cayenne...usually you stop by a dealership take a look then do more homework. We did that.

So then I went online called a few places and got a good deal. I then called the other dealers to see if they could offer a better deal one time. If not no biggie I had a deal in hand ready to go (This is where Glen F. from Beverly Hills failed...he told me if you have a deal for X% off go for it as he couldn't match it...then he harasses me by email for the next 2 months after I place my order with Circle). Lastly, I went back to the original dealer to first showed us the Cayenne giving him an opportunity to win the business being the first contact we had.

No one wants to pay more than they should or what the market demands so you need to do your due diligence.

It's as if when you ask for a discount and they won't do it, they assume you are in a long negotiation process with them. Like bruinxman the last 2 cars I bought from the Sales guy who stepped up and met my price. Competing salesmen who sat back hoping I would buy from them at a higher price were incensed. 1 guy emailed and called for a week. The other more recently, came on strong for 2 days before he let go. You would think they would learn.

and I thought we had tough in Houston where two of the three dealers are owned by the same Sonic group, North Houston just changed hands and I don't have a real reference. Most German car dealers in Houston carry the ubber arrogant a$$-whole sales guy as a norm a pita to deal with really, so I guess we have something in common with southern Cali

I've bought at least 10 new cars in the past 10 years (mostly in the mid-west) and the brand doesn't matter, it's all the same. I have a P dealer 3 blocks from my house but ended up having to buy my last three of them 11 hours away. When you show up in person, with money, ready to do a deal and they throw 1% your way and brush you off, you just have to wonder how much they are losing out on. Three days after that experience I flew to Dallas and picked up my first S, then I bought two more cars. That salesman could have sold me 3 cars since last summer, what a bummer for both of us.

Sorry to hijack...

What I usually do is give a call to a car broker that I know. Tell him the MSRP and let him give me the absolute best price. I have used him once for the wife's MB, but have purchased a few cars after that thru the dealer. I was offered -$500 better than the best deal I could find at the time I was buying my M5, but decided that .005% savings was not worth picking up the car from his office rather than a dealership, where he would get his porter to put miles on the ordered car to get it to his lot. But I digress...

I would call a broker, get his numbers and call around with that number as a reference point. I would then ask various dealerships for the best discount they can do without ever revealing my reference point. I don't like to bargain against myself or perhaps even shortchange myself, so I'll ask them to throw out their best effort from the get go (even though I know that their initial *best* is not really the best, but it's a good indication of where they stand on discounts).

Dealers that can't even come close, I cross off the list. The ones that are left, I try to work with. I know that dealerships show consideration for those who buy the car from them when it comes to service (loaners and such), so I try to stay locally if the price is similar.

The 2 dealerships that quote the best initial discount from the get go are the ones I will consider. I will choose one of them (if both discounts are close) based on Service reviews / experiences / location and then try to nudge that selected dealer down further. At that time, I will throw out the broker price to have them match or beat it, if they haven't done so already. And only at that point will I usually reveal that I am in talks with XYZ dealer (whichever my 2nd choice is), but if he can beat the broker price, I'll commit right then and there to him (which was my dealership of choice anyway).

So my strategy hinges on the Broker's Price. Actually, I have a friend that calls a 2nd broker for me to quote a discount as well to confirm that the 1st broker is actually giving the best discount. So if I offend anyone along the line, it'll be the broker moreso than the dealerships. But since I have given him business before, I don't feel so bad. I may not be getting the absolute bottom price this way, but my conscience feels better and my brain tells me that I got a good deal.
