Wheel size versus ride quality
I agree with that statement. You might add if you go off road, you need to go with the 19s. I made the decision for the 20s as a compromise after the sales manager at the Porsche dealer told me pretty much what you just wrote. He said for example, the Panamera is 1" less equivalent on all wheels and he was diving a 20" on his previous Panamera and then the one he's driving now is 19" (equivalent to 20" on Cayenne) and he said the comfort was considerably better.
I agree with that part mainly because that's what I have on my white CTT. The pictures are unfair. A dusty car with 20s in front of crash rails versus shiny car with 22s in front of sand, sun and palm trees.
Besides wheel diameter, another factor to consider is tire selection as to how the car will ride and handle. I just traded in a 2011 CTT with 21 inch Turbo II wheels and Michelin Latitude Sport summer tires. I live in the Northeast where the roads are not great, but I thought this combination was very smooth - no complaints on any road surface, exceptionally good on smooth surfaces.
I just took delivery on a 2012 CTT with 20 inch RS Spyders and Pirelli Scorpion Verde all-season tires. At lower speeds I don't notice much difference other than the higher side of the 20 inch tires is "softer" in handling. But a higher speeds (75 MPH+) on smooth roads, I notice a very subtle vibration that I don't believe I felt on the 21 inch summer tires. I even had my dealer check wheel balance to eliminate the possibility that there was a balance problem. Admittedly this is a very subjective opinion, you would really have to drive the cars back to back, at least I would, to know for sure.
My point is that tire selection is also important to the overall handling versus comfort equation. When these all season tires wear out, I plan to go with good summer tires on the 20 inch Spyders and go back to my 19 inch Scorpion Snow and Ice for the winters - Pepper doesn't have to worry about winter tires or rough roads.

Forgot to mention it,of course tire selection has a huge impact..thanks for reminding us
Thats not just any crash rail
car was dusty because car washes are closed
on Sunday in that state for environmental reasons
Another great point brought up is that weather does influence what is the optimal type of tire
So does the type of roads..which is why I was pleasantly surprised about how the 22s(P ZerOs as well)feel not that much firmer, but more precise
Ps:here's a pic with nicer background(Normandy cliffs) and clean car

I just purchased a new 2012 V6 with the 20" spider wheels. the ride was very good but i wanted the looks of the bigger wheels. I purchased 22" Turbo replica wheels and the look is 1000 percent better. The ride difference is probably 10-20% firmer, but still a nice ride in the city and on the highway. the roads are pretty decent in my area. I have included before and after pictures.
I sold the 20" wheels and tires on ebay and purchased the new set including TPMS and tires for about 750 dollars more.

Those 22 replicas do look really nice. Just wondering if you have the extended wheel arches? What I mean is did you have to do anything special to get the 22s to fit your V6? I am interested in 22s for my 2013 V6, but was told that I would need to install the extended wheel arches.

By wheel arches do you mean the fenders or spacers? It all depends on the width of your rim and the offset. I didn't have to do anything to my vehicle as the rim width was 9.5" and the offset was 48 if i remember correctly. The wheel company can tell you if it will fit standard or need modification based on your model (v6, turbo, gts etc..) If your looking at an 11" rim and offset of 56 then you would likely need to modify the fenders. I have attached 2 more pics so you can see the rear and corner views of mine as yours would look the same. I have only had my car for 2 weeks and it has been a blast researching all the different options. So far I have only tinted the windows and added the new wheels/tires. I will probably add the sport exhaust next.

I have also only had my Cayenne for about a month, but have added front tint, clear bra, clear markers, pedals, and all around LED light conversion (only lights I can't figure out is the mirror puddles). I guess I can worry about the wheel upgrade and possible painted extended wheel arches in the spring.
Coming from X6 , I'm not sure if definition of comfort would align with yours. I've CTT with 21" Turbo wheel + PASM and Air Suspension.
I must said in normal ride height and PASM set to Normal, there is no comfort issue at all. I drove the car in Comfort mode with Normal ride height for the first 500km, it felt like a Lexus (with loud exhaust). Now I've been driving in Sport (PASM) mode with normal or low ride height. And I felt the car is still more comfortable than my X6.
Oh, just to add to the comment about air suspension. It indeed reduce road bump being felt. The difference is very noticeable.

I got 21" on my CayenneS with PASM, ride is great no problem with comfort etc. only problem is that the selection of tires are limited compared to 20" and 22", therefore prices are higher (approx $100 per tire) for 21" compared to 22" tires.
