Gear When Coming To A Complete Stop

I have a month old 2012 Cayenne Turbo. I have noticed in the last 2 weeks that intermittently while driving in Manual Mode when I come to a complete stop the gearbox only goes down to 2nd gear, not 1st gear. I am being told by the dealer that this is normal. They are telling me that will go to 1st gear if the temperature is low and only 2nd if the temperature is at a certain threshold. Having had other cars with Manual Modes, I have never seen this.
Is this accurate information and a unique feature of Porsche's and/or the Cayenne?
Thank you for any input.

Congrats on the CTT. I have an 06 CTT, and it behaves exactly as yours. It is normal.

Mine does that as well if coming to a stop without waiting long. It will switch to 1 if I'm sitting there stopped long enough. As long as you're not peeling away in 2nd, I think you should be ok. You can always switch to 1 manually if you like even in Auto mode.

Happened to mine as well, does the same on my BMW X6 too. I think it's the design.

My X5 50 used to stay in 2nd by default in manual mode, since the first gear was pretty short. Have not tried the manual mode for my Cayenne base yet.

I never really paid too much attention to which gear I am in,but I have begun to recently..
When I start my car in the morning,it is always in 1st gear and does not go right away into second..so with all the power I have on tap,I have to be gentle when I first drive off

I did the same on the weekend. I was paying attention to it more. I was using auto and manual modes. In both, when I come to a stop, even in manual, it will put itself back into 1 by itself even if I leave it in 2 when I come to a stop. So, while it's not unheard of to start off on 2, it does automatically go to 1 for me at a stop. Dunno if this helps you more or makes it more confusing.

Thank you for the responses. I always drive in manual mode. When coming to a complete stop most of the time the transmission automatically goes to 1st gear. Maybe 20% of the time it only goes to second gear. Not clear if there is a problem or if it does that by design, and if so why?
I presume for performance you would always want to start out in 1st gear from a standing stop.
