Doesn't hurt, unless cleaning/re-oiling instructions are not followed properly. Too much residual oil can foul or damage the MAF sensor. They'll last a lifetime, whereas OE filters are disposable. Whether it will amortize, depends upon how long you intend to keep the car. An OE paper air filter costs between $17 and $22 depending upon brand, more at the dealer. My K&N cost $50. I think the OE air filter replacement cycle is 2 years or 20k miles. Using those figures, the K&N will have paid for itself before it's time to get the 3rd OE filter.

So now we blame the filter when an owner doesn't follow the cleaning/oiling instructions properly? That's the same twisted logic that blames the gun when somebody gets shot or the drug when somebody overdoses. So if you permit your MAF sensor to get "gummy with oil", it's absolutely no one's fault but your own

A K&N factory guy said gains of 1-1/2 to 2 percent are possible. That and never having to change an air filter again are worth it to some people. If it does get over-oiled after a cleaning and fouls the mass air/fuel sensor, CRC does make a MAF sensor cleaner. It a good product to use at a regular service interval too.
