If you want more room and don't need to keep the flip-up door, the whole ashtray assembly can be unscrewed from the back of the console panel. This provides a much larger space than you'd get from just the ashtray insert. You'd lose the flip door, of course, as that's part of it. For the really brave you could keep the door and alter the plastics of it. It's a separate part so you could reverse it by purchasing another.

You can also use a rubber jar opener or web-style shelf liner/placemat to get a grip on the twist ferrule under the gearshift ****.
