Just ruined seat with leather cleaner

Damn I just ruined my cognac seat using Leatherique cleaner. This is a picture of the top of the bolster on the 18 way drivers seat where I get some jean dye transfer. I have had success before cleaning it but this time it stripped the dye right off the leather from scrubbing too much with the Leatherique and microfiber cloth. Just 15K miles on car. I guess I have to get it dyed professionally. Any ideas on where to go for that? Thanks.

Man that really sucks :(

I used that stuff on my XK8 a few times, but it always left this oily residue that I didn't like so I stopped. Still have the bottles in the basement. One cracked open a few years ago and made an absolute mess and ruined some stuff that it ate into. Nasty stuff on so many levels.

So now I just go with the "it wears how it wears" approach. The 996 has lived outside it's whole life with no sun shades, covers, or tints and it's leather has held up just fine with no treatments. Black and dark colors don't show the stains like you're running into though and they are also easier to touch up yourself if needed (need to do the bolsters in the BMW as they are wearing from getting in and out).

Find a good shop in your area that does a lot of custom work. If they don't do the interior themselves they'll probably have good contacts for you to go to. Your dealer may or may not have recommendations (actually it might be worth talking to them anyway as you might be able to get it replaced as a warranty issue).

That does suck severely! Now I know to not use this stuff....

And secondly, only 15K! I've had my CTTS for 5 months now and I'm over 6K!

I know my heart would stop and fall to my feet if I saw that. Similar to how I burned through paint trying to buff a scratch out.

For future purposes, I've had very good success with Lexol leather care products. Works great on saddles and couches, too.

Thanks for the sympathy guys. I was wondering if the dealer would cover it so I will check on that first. I do wonder if it is just the quality of the dye to come off like that or if the cleaner is harsh enough to strip it. Anyway I will have a full bottle of the cleaner sitting around also. And a full bottle of their conditioner which I hadn't tried yet. :(

Oh no! Good info...

I've used Leatherique before and had no ill results. However, i have not yet used on my 18-way ventilated seats.

Is Leatherique that bad or was the major reason the aggressive scrubbing?

I've read tremendous reviews prior to my purchase and use.

Harlequin NY May 29, 2014 04:08 PM

I read good reviews before purchasing it but yes I scrubbed it for a while. Actually when the first dark spot appeared I thought it was something from the jeans being stubborn and kept applying the leatherique to the cloth and scrubbing and made it worse. I have used it previously without a problem so I don't know who the culprit is. Plus it is at the peak of the bolster where it probably gets the maximum rubbing of my arse getting in and out. :(

BlazinPond May 29, 2014 04:12 PM

Good to know and thanks again for sharing.
At this point, i'll need to be careful if i choose to still apply.
But as important, one should minimize unnecessary scrubbing based on your results.

Strange. Used Leatherique on many cars, with leather as soft as the Cayenne and never an issue.

Currently using Leather Masters.

Maybe it's just where it is and the rubbing from getting in and out that is behind the problem ? I wonder if anyone else wore out that high bolster on the 18ways. I doubt it though. Here is another sad view.

The best product to use is Swisswax. It's expensive but well worth it.

The product is fine. I think you just rubbed too long and too hard. I mean the seat. ;)
