Better performance air filter
I used to go after "performance" air filters as well when I was in high school, however I switched back to "regular" filters.
I have used K&n, the foam filters but after some research the general physics of it is that you sacrifice filter performance for airflow performance. I do not see the justification for the little bit of decreased airflow restriction for more dirt getting through, unless its a complete cold air intake system rather than a simple drop in filter.
Don't take my word for it however, you should do your own empirical research and make the decision for yourself.
Some of the performance filters that do offer semi-equivalent filtration have a lower number of miles before you need to do a maintenance which usually involve water, soaking, and oils. Many "performance" filters tout the cost saving of not having to buy a new filter, however, the preparation, cleaning, and oiling has its own time and money cost. It is my personal opinion that if you own a Porsche, at least in respect to air filters, just use the OEM or OEM equivalent filters that are rated to protect your engine from contaminants, which are alot easier to replace as well as go longer miles between changes, despite the slight increase in cost over long term.
As a side note, when I went to old pathfinder meets, some of the off road monsters used to use thick foam air filters, as I understood it, this was because they had super high dirt holding capacity before having to be washed and re soaked after a desert/trail run.
