diy Deviated Stitching. black or red on beige?
I turn 41 this Aug
Too weird, mine is in July (my wife's is in Aug, but she is a year younger).
Thread came today and I'm a bit disappointed.
The indigo, peacock, and lilac are all darker than pictured. I'm not even going to bother with the indigo as it is just too dark. The peridot is pretty much spot on the website image, but I was hoping it was a bit saturated and would be darker.
I did a full run of the lilac on the back of a rear headrest. It looks ok, but I'm not convinced. Took me about 30 minutes to do a 12-18" run.
When my thumb un-cramps I'll do a run of the peridot or peacock and I'll get some pics when all 3 are done.
The quality of the thread is really good though and it really is the perfect weight.

i like the brighter color much better. i'm going to do the steering wheels in neon orange instead of the red or yellow. i really like the peridot. it's more subtle than i like but it's a good match to the factory color. i did the black part of my seat in red and did't like it because it's too dark. will do them in neon orange as well. might even try the neon yellow. might as well go all out
p.s. i recommend use a match to melt the end of the threads before you start to preventing fraying.
p.p.s i recommend starting in the middle and work both ways so you don't have to drag the whole length of the thread through the old thread over and over- the coating can wear off and fraying excessive. think about where you want to end the threads- you don't want to tie off three thread around the same place. you could do the whole section of the steering wheel in one long string and two knots-outside one way and outside back then go back in the middle- i can't do it with the bead cord because the cord gets too worn out and frayed half way- no problem with the yellow outdoor grade bonded polyester thread though(limited color).
p.p.p.s i also recommend grinding off the tip of the needle. you don't need a sharp needle for this job. use the smallest curve needle with a round tip- you won't ever damage your leather. think about how and where you want to tie off the end for the seat cover threads-some can be hidden by tucking the knot in by poking the needle deep in and out away from the site and cut the thread tip off- the thread tip will retract and the needle hole hidden-this is how we do in surgery. difficult to explain. if you need it, i will post pic.

use a dull needle- preferably much smaller than this one. impossible to damage vinyl/leather.
start in the middle and work both directions-pulling the thread through the old thread damages the coating of the thread- making it fuzzy.
tie it however you like at the end.
switch to a sharp needle and poke through the vinyl/leather.
pull it tight and cut it off-not too close.
the tip will retract and you won't see the hole anymore.
same thing on top.
finished look.
for steering wheel, start on one end. 1/3 and 2/3.
1/3 end to the top and tie it off.
2/3 end to the top and start running in the middle.
tie it off on the bottom and finish. one thread and 2 knots.
the color is still holding. not faded yet. not much wear/tear yet. didn't know about techart. i saw this technique from some other forum. vw or honda i think. very easy to do but hard to source the stuff.
