958 S With Fabspeed Setup
958 S With Fabspeed Setup
Hey everyone. Thought i would share my weekend adventure and a small review of the Fabspeed Maxflo exhaust system for the 958 S.
The car has had the cat bypass pipes on it for about 7 months now. I definitely was enjoying the volume gains the pipes brought but was looking for a little more volume and deeper sound with less rasp. The PSE was originally going to be retrofit but thought it would just increase the rasp and not give me the low tones i wanted. Keeping price and quality in mind, Fabspeed came to mind.
I took a trip up to see the team at their headquarters in Fort Washington PA. The building is large and sits on a nice area of land. You walk into their show room which displays some of their products along with a few Fabspeed owned project cars- Mclaren, Bently, Porsche... I was greeted by one of their performance specialists John Gaydos. We had made arrangements the day before. Keeping things brief, he was very professional and gave me a full tour of the shop. It is what you should expect a place to look like where exotic cars go to get tuned. They have some big stuff like an in house 4wd dyno along with a water jet machine. Very nice.
During the installation we came across 2 frustrating problems.
1. The passenger side muffler tip piping was either bent or fabricated incorrectly. The tips touched at the bottom part and there is no adjustment in that regard. It took the effort of two people and 2 large wooden dowels to spread the pipes enough so the tips would be parallel. That was the easy problem.
2. For the life of me, we could not get the clamps to hold the tips on. I have a set of PSE tips and clamps that bolted right up on this system. Upon examination, the socket portion of the joint on the tip is about 3mm larger than the PSE tip joint. I believe this is what prevented the included clamps from tightening everything together. Also, the edges of the included clamps flare up almost preventing it from pulling the joint together. We would up using the stock Porsche clamps from the PSE system i have for sale which now have to be replaced at my expense before selling the system. As they say, YMMV.
I am really happy with the way the exhaust looks. The tips are sharp and fit the car well. The muffler smoothed out a lot of the high pitch rasp that I didn't like. The sound is low and rather powerful. As you can hear from the video, it sounds pretty sweet. The system does introduce some vibration into the cabin which can be felt through your feet created by sound pressure from the exhaust. It also creates a slight deep drone inside that is only apparent when accelerating and decelerating at low RPM. It can be detected in my video. You have to expect some compromises when doing something like this but both of those are minimal. I might put back the secondary cats to see what happens.
