I've owned my 2012 Cayenne for about 4 months now with zero issues, but a few weeks ago I had the red airbag light illuminate on the dash.

I navigated through the menus of my iCarsoft PORII handheld device until I reached the airbag menu to read the faults.

Just in case the error was a glitch, I chose to clear the codes, but as expected, it came back within the first trip after.

All of my Google and forum research has yielded little help. I've tried adjusting the seats in a bunch of various ways incase something was pinched, and nothing appears to be unplugged.

Has anyone ever dealt with fixing this code permanently or know where to start? I'd hate to be forced to go to the dealership to get them to explore further.

I doubt if it involved the seat sensors - it sounds as if the readings on the steering-wheel airbag are out of range. Have you had the steering wheel off? The references to stage-1 and stage-2 are because the airbags are two stage devices. If the driver has their seat-belt on - then only one stage is fired in a crash. If not - then both stages are fired.

Problem is how to test it.. I'd be a bit nervous playing with the airbags since setting one off by accident is entirely possible.

 

I am pretty sure that points to the driver airbag.

It is often caused a bad clock spring.

That's concerning. If this means that the driver's side airbag is turned off, that's something I'll need to address sooner rather than later. At this point when I clear the code, it comes right back as soon as I start the car rather than staying off for a few hours. I haven't messed with the steering wheel at all and nothing on the car has changed, which adds to the confusion of the possible bad clock spring out of nowhere.

This is IMHO - one for the dealer, or an independent with PIWIS. Part of the reason being - we have no idea which "drivers airbag" the fault is pointing to. There are four "drivers airbags." One that starts in the A pillar and then runs all the way along the interior above the doors, one in the steering wheel, one under the steering wheel (knee airbag) in the panel under the dash, and one in the left side of the drivers seat.

How do you determine which one is giving the fault?

 

Still trying to track down this issue.

I'd seen a bunch of instances online about a lot of other VW, Audi, Porsche vehicles where the airbag connector under the driver's seat worked its way loose over time and needed repair. The fact that the limit has been exceeded indicates that there isn't a short or ground issue, but instead infinite resistance. This usually means something has become disconnected.

Hoping I'd find a disconnected harness, I removed the four bolts securing the driver's seat in place and flipped the seat backwards so I could look at the underside. Unfortunately, nothing was out of the ordinary and all the connections looked fine. I reset the light one more time after double checking all the connections under the seat, but the light immediately came back on.

There are a few reports regarding the connections under the steering wheel. There was even a VW recall showing the same "B1000 1B" code being caused by a torn ribbon connector. I will investigate and update when I get a chance to remove the trim around the wheel.

If that shows nothing, then I'll be forced to seek out professional assistance.

 

Well, hopefully wrapping this thread up for good. My fiance had off this past Friday, and was able to take our 958 to the local Porsche dealership. I figured she could have better luck than I at getting this airbag issue resolved and I was right.

Within an hour, she gave me a call saying they'd already taken the car into the service department and solved the problem. She said they said something about there being an active recall but that the technician didn't get too far into it, but did ask if the airbag had been removed recently (it hadn't).

The light has now been off for nearly a week and at a total cost of $0.00 to us. Success! The light use to trigger back on immediately after being cleared, so i suspect the issue has been resolved long-term. If for some reason any airbag related codes come back, I'll update the thread.
