Owner Pays $82K for parking spot
Owner Pays $82K for parking spot
I get the first spot, about 5 feet away from the door, for $0.
Anything more than that is a ripoff. Who knew parking garages were a more lucrative business than the business being run in the building they are built next to?

Quick google search, wonder if this is related to the OP, if so the price really went up.
ABC News article:
The Internal Revenue Service auctioned two residential parking spaces in Boston Thursday for $560,000, and an 8- by 12-foot parking space in San Francisco's hip South Beach neighborhood sold for $82,000 the week before, as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

I don't believe there is such as thing as free parking. There is no such thing as a free lunch in this world...if you don't pay directly for parking, it must be tucked in the purchase price of the home/office or included in the rental pricing.
It costs money to construct these parking slots. Although it is only 8 by 12 in size...there is also cost to construct all the ramps and driveways leading up to the parking slot. In building's case, the elevator lobby, elevator extra stops, fire exits and other components to make a proper parking slot. - I highly doubt that the developers of these parking slots will just give them away for free.
In other countries, $82k is cheap due to the expensive land cost. Moreover, renting out parking spaces has its advantages too...not having to renovate, repaint, or restore after a tenant leaves is one big advantage.
