Have you checked the wiring (probably much easier said than done..)

DLF is infamous around these parts
Short to ground probably means a wire has become pinched somewhere. Any issues around the steering column or under the dash been worked on recently ? Can also be an issue near the control unit (which is under the console between the 2 front seats)
