I don't put too much weight on relative performance at DE events. At a Pueblo lapping day last year, I was able to tag onto the back of a 997tt for many laps in my Evo. I won't say it was skill, but perhaps more willingness on my part to move up the risk curve. On the same day, an E36 M3 with suspension mods was outpacing me even though my Evo was significantly faster on the straights.
very true. At the track, too much hp can hurt you, and being a bad driver will hurt you even more. Years ago, I remember going to VIR and had a couple of buddies there, one with a lotus elise, with track setup and track slicks. That car could turn so well it wasn't even funny, but my buddy couldn't pick a good line to save his life and was getting lapped by pretty much every car out there, when he should have been doing the lapping on the other cars.

The turbo wastegate won't actuate until the maximum absolute pressure is attained.

Atmospheric Pressure + Boost Pressure = Absolute Pressure

For example, if atmospheric pressure is 2psi lower at altitude, the turbocharger boosts 2psi higher to achieve the same absolute pressure. Of course, there are limits to boost pressure increases due to the design of the turbocharger. There's a point at which the turbocharger will be making more heat than boost.

Superchargers have no similar way to compensate for the lower atmospheric pressure. There's no way supercharger boost can be increased on the fly. As such, the supercharged motor suffers from lower atmospheric pressure in a similar way to a normally aspirated motor. You just can't swap to higher boost pulleys on the fly to compensate for changing atmospheric conditions.

very true. The correction factors for supercharged and turbo cars are different at this altitude. The supercharged car is in between NA and turbo in loss at altitude. And the higher the pressure the turbos run the more efficient and less loss they have. that is why EVO's and STI's on very high boost do well up at this altitude. a 996tt running 1.1-1.3 bar isn't as efficient as an EVO running 1.6+ bar. Similarly a built NA engine will loose less power than a stock low compression engine at this altitude. High compression and cams makes a difference as well.

However, the ZR1 has so much power that I doubt there is much that will overtake it even at this altitude at least not from the factory.

Yes, I completely agree. This is why I was sure to point out that when we got to the *straights* is when I would walk him =)

Do you run with NASA? See you at the April event at HPR?

I haven't done a track event since July. I traded my Evo for an E55 AMG. The E55 won't be much fun on the track, but I'm thinking of buying something cheap and fun to scratch that track itch.

I dunno, I had my cousin's husband's 2003 E55 AMG terrorizing the streets of Chicago this past fall....granted it won't be much "proper" track fun, but I think it'd be fun to swing that car around the corners with the tires smokin!

I just registered for the April 16 HPR day. I'm not sure what to expect from the E55. Piloting the big beast, at least I'll have an excuse for not being quick first time out at that track.
