foam pads or wool ?

for a rotary buffer machine for black or dark blue paint, which pad is better? Do the wool pads leave swirl marks behind? someone said the foam is the better pad, it does not leave swirls, but then I heard that wool pads give the paint a better shine... any thoughts?

thanks

Wool pads are designed for heavy cutting. When used properly you can finish down a wool pad fairly well, but it must be finished with foam medium cut, and foam finishing cut polishing pads afterwards.

Wool vs. Foam
Pro –wool is faster cutting and generates less heat and therefore leaves the surface cooler, removes heavy oxidation much more efficiently than a form pad. Wool pads are easier to control compared to foam. They glide as the wool nap ‘lies down’ and will conform to vehicle body shape easily. Make certain to spur the wool fibres when it loads up with product.

Con -wool can leave micro marring (buffer trails) finish with a foam pad to remove. Don’t overwork the polish as wool will break diminishing abrasives faster than foam, the surface lubricants will dry up faster and you could end up dry buffing unless you’re careful.

Neither pad is better than the other...they are each designed to be used in particular situations. It all depends on what you're trying to fix. If you have deep scratches and swirls, some that need wetsnading, then you'd probably want to use a wool pad. There are many different types of wool pads as well. However, for most applications, the foam pad does the trick. I guess the best thing is to take some pictures of your car, and we'll let you know what to do. Tell us what machine and polishes you're using and what pads you have.

tdekany is infamous around these parts
Just to add m2c: wool pad IS safer than cutting foam pads. Both will leave marks behind. That is why you do another step with something milder.
