The 30 owners of BMW's matte-finish Frozen Gray M3 coupe are reportedly being required to sign an agreement acknowledging that they won't hold the company responsible if they screw up their car's paint. According to a post on the Bimmerfest forums, this is how you care for BMW's matte paint:
  • Never polish or wax the frozen gray paint as it could lead to a glossy surface.
  • If washing your frozen gray M3 in a automatic car wash, choose a car wash that does not apply vehicle wax. Rinse the M3 with high pressure water to remove dirt before sending it through the automatic car wash to avoid scratches from sand, dust and other micro-particles.
  • Remove bugs, bird poo, tree sap, tar, fuel spills or oil immediately using a soft sponge.
Avoid strong rubbing while cleaning the frozen paint. BMW sells suitable products for maintaining the frozen paint at your local dealer.
  • Repairs to the paint (scratches, dents, etching) must be completed by a BMW-trained body shop. Most auto body shops will not be capable of repairing the frozen gray paint.

I was wondering about that as well. I was recently on a factory tour at Bentley, Crewe, UK. and they are now offering flat paint on the GT!!

joeyrotorhead is infamous around these parts
sounds like way too much work to me... if you want the flat look just go with the vinyl wrap... that way you always have the option of going back to the stock paint

Typically washing this matte paint and using a detail spray is all you'll need to do. You need an actual detail spray that has no wax...we use Meguiar's Final Inspection. I've seen matte black paints ruined by detailers that hadn't a clue what to do with it. Paint technology is becoming more and more complex requiring educated and skilled craftsman to work on them. This should be a very cool color to see in real life...looking forward to seeing one in person.

Matte or Satin Finish Paint - do not polish or wet-sand a matte clear, as the flattening agents that cause the matte appearance (textured finish) by diffuse 30 degree reflection are retained very close to the clear coat surface. By levelling the surface the light will be reflected evenly and result in a ‘shine’. Use a rotary polisher and an ultra soft, zero abrasive cut (Lake County CCS Concourse Gold (100 PPI) foam pad) with a mild chemical paint cleaner (Zaino Z-AIO - All in One) it will remove surface marring and leave it satin matte. Use a clear polymer (Zaino Z-CS - Clear Seal) the key is to add surface protection and depth without adding gloss.

Swisswax - Opaque Wax- a premium wax specially developed for all satin matt paintwork types. It offers your car's paintwork thorough long term protection against all kinds of negative contaminants without damaging its satin matt appearance.

Sounds like the matte finish is more trouble than it's worth. If it's that easy to ruin it, why bother with it?
