I steam clean when doing engines but sometimes I pressure wash as well. Depending on the car.

Steam clean and protected with FK1's #108.

My way:
First get some engine degreaser. I always used some Engine-Brite in a can. Foam works best. It’s thicker and really does some cleaning.

Next hit the engine with a hard jet of water on the more greasy areas of the engine. Just be aware of wires, connectors, etc where water can sit and give electrical issues. Might be best to get some aluminum foil and wrap these connectors and wires with.

Next let the engine run for about 5 mins or use a leaf blower to dry the engine best you can.

Next get some Armorall low gloss formula and do a 70/30 mix with water. Shake up really well.

Now coat the full engine. And start the engine and let it run – idle for 5 mins.

Next after 5-mins turn the motor off, and wipe the engine fully with a rag.

Next re-coat the engine with the armorall solution.

Start the engine up and let it run for another 5 mins

Turn off the engine and re-wipe really good.

That’s it…the motor should look like brand new. In time the solution will burn off the headers etc, so expect some slight smoke when you start up the car.

in a 996, that's all I have to worry about covering is the intake? I can just blast away inside the engine compartment with a hose?

Thanks

Run the engine a bit, cover the intake, use as little water as you need to clean. You don't want to blast water in there but you should be able to clean it well.

You have to admit, the underside of that car is a work of art! How long did it take you?

One suggestion: replace that expansion tank. Looks much better.
