550/575 Carbon Mirror Triangle Install
550/575 Carbon Mirror Triangle Install
We had a 550 customer come by the shop Tuesday for installation of our carbon fiber mirror triangles. Even if you are not thinking of changing to carbon, putting in a new set of triangles is a quick half-hour weekend project that will get rid of at least one bit of sticky plastic.
Unlike the 355 triangle with its exposed screws, the Maranello triangle is held in by one press fitting at the top and by the door panel at the bottom. Here is replacement the process:
1. Grip old triangle at the top and pull out gently.
2. Pull up to remove triangle lip from behind door panel.
3. Wash black goo residue from fingers!
4. Insert bottom of new triangle into gap between the door panel and the door.
5. Swing the triangle up and press metal fitting on door into the receptor on the triangle. If you can not get it to go in, try pressing down on the upper edge of the triangle.
6. If you still can not get the triangle into place, notch the bottom of the receptor in the triangle using a dremmel. This will give enough clearance to mount the fitting. The notch won't weaken the triangle.
7. Adjust the rubber weatherstripping to make sure the triangle is filling snuggly in it.
8. Step back and admire your handiwork!
We'll post some photos of the bcccack of the triangle to make some of the above more clear in the morning.
With our customer car, the triangles matched very well with his OEM carbon console, steering wheel, and instrument cluster. They will look great in any 550 or 575. These are laminate parts which means we have layered the carbon over the original plastic. All of our 550 triangles are based on brand new stock. There is no core exchange so you keep your original mirrors in case you show the car. Feel free to PM or ask any questions. Any San Francisco Bay Area customers are welcome to stop by the San Carlos shop and check them out in person.
