Charging X amount or % of somebody net worth for a speeding ticket it's 100% socialist!

..... and I'd be inclined to add entirely fair.

As has been mentioned already, a $500 fine is hardly a deterrent to anyone with a net worth of $22m (demonstrated quite clearly that the offender in this case was a repeat offender), and I think it'd be far more motivating NOT to speed if the possible consequence was a fine of a quarter of a million dollars.

That being said, this was a special case, and a fine amount which was influenced by the offenders' driving history.

Someone suggested on the previous page that a minimum fine be set (I agree; it's not fair that those who are on welfare get to speed free of charge), but I feel that the maximum fine shouldn't be capped, and should be a percentage of the total net worth of the individual in question.

Perhaps they should do this at restraunts as well? instead of tipping vs the bill the tip relative to your wealth.
You can apply this to anything, and the scary part is once you apply it to one thing crime or not it will spread to all things the government has control over, and in this country that is more and more increasing.
What is the motivation to make money?
Socialism at its best is the epitome of mediocrity.

That's ridiculous.....tipping has never and will never be something regulated by the government, and the fact is that the higher your income, the "nicer" the restaurant you're likely to go to and you'll tip more anyway. I see the program less as being a deterrent to make money, and less as a punishment to those who earn a higher income, but more as a way of making sure the purpose behind the fines (which is, honestly, as a deterrent) still stands true......as I said earlier, a $500 fine to someone who earns a six figure salary is pittance and won't deter anything.

Provided the money garnered from a means tested fine scheme is used in a worthwhile manner (driver education and training, improvement to roads and freeways etc), I don't object.

What's the motivation to earn money?

How about the ability to buy said P-car in the first place?

The ticket was a lot of money

Lets get to the Obama attacks.... I joke about him in August and some A$$ on here leaves me bad feedback. I guess I just saw what an joke he was early on I am glad my sentiment is now in the majority... Don't laugh about a ticket being based on what you make I am sure some idiot in government might just try it. Hey, there is a tire tax, a cosmetic dentistry and medicine tax anything is possible!!

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. *What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. *The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. * When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend,is the beginning of the end of any nation. *You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."*

It looks like you're having problems understanding what he wrote.

He wrote that a fixed percentage rate of fines was equally effective; he mentioned nothing of a standard flat amount. You surmised that incorrectly based on how you read his comments.
