Is the 997GT3 $40-50k+ better than a 997S?
If the $$$ issues are not critical or limiting I'd say 100% get the GT3. They are different in their design and intent. The 997S is a great car but the GT3 just goes so much farther. I love my GT3 to the point of never seeing myself part with it. The mods done to it make it so much more personal.

I recently sold my 997 C2S coupe and took delivery on a 2008 GT3 six weeks ago. The GT3 is the better track car without a doubt and I'm glad to be one of the lucky guys that got a 08 (at MSRP!).
That said get a low mileage C2S for about $70k plus a set of PSC, seats, roll bar and harnesses and you have one hell of a track car for the money. It can take you through many years of DE. My skill set in no way exceeded its ability and I doubt many of us could extract 10/10ths. Plus you have the convenience of the back seats, better stereo, more creature comforts, etc. making it more versitile. My kids hate the GT3 because they can't ride in it.
This is also a semi academic discussion because new GT3s are no longer to be had and you probably will pay over list for a low mileage used one.
If I wasn't lucky enough to get the allocation I would be happily doing 12-15 DE days a year in the C2S. Spend 10K on the upgrades, 7k on an open trailer, bank some for DE fees/ hotels, etc. and finally buy the wife something nice so she won't give you grief when you blow off the family for the track so much!
Cheers

If you are like me if i have time to go enjoy my P car i also want to be able to take my wife and kid, and with no back seats you are limited. GT3 deff. a sick car but mabey not quite as practical. I guess in a perfect world you would have both... enjoy what ever you get.
i have an allocation

I didn't realize you had the allocation. It comes down to this,
If you are a track guy take it.
If you are not really a track guy and don't see youself getting sucked into the track obsession, then get a nice C2S or a Turbo. Let someone who will use it have the GT3. It's like buying a Stratovarius if you barely play violin. It's not a matter of if you can afford it.
Sorry to bust your chops but there are so few GT3 I feel it is a crime against humanity if every single one isn't being flogged like a $20 *****!

Ok, so you are an acception to the rule. I am thinking like a flat land Florida guy I guess.
The more I listen to you, the more I think you'd be happy with the C2S/ Turbo. Both are incredible sports cars and will make you very happy on your one or two DEs per year.
I'm sure a few will disagree with me but a GT3 makes a lousy daily driver, especially here in NY (anybody ever get caught in a downpour with PSC or Corsas?). For laughs I drove mine to the office Saturday morning and it sucked worrying about the chin spoiler at every wrinkle in the road.
The C2S/ Turbo are amazing at how well they do both street and track well. The GT3 is much more narrowly focused. Personally I wished they went even further (ie - ditch the sunroof, factory club sport package, lose more weight, etc.)
Well, good luck, I'm sure there are many who would love to be stuck with your "problem".
