just out of curiosity, what's the advtange of having such a tall shiftkob/rod?

Its a sequential manual tranny. although that still did not answer your question. My guess is that being tall its very close to the steeting wheel when you need to shift its very close and you dont need to move your arm down to tap it, thus being a lot quicker and easier.
