I was thinking more about this today and I think it was Gemballa that did number of Matte black vehicles....

Not quite. Flat would be flat with no sheen or shine to it. Matte would have a very slight shine to it. They're pretty close. Could look the same given different lighting conditions.....

MW says matte is "dull and flat, without a shine". wouldn't a slight shine be "satin"?

Guess you're right. I'm used to looking at a photograph with a matte finish and seeing a slight shine to it.

Semantics aside I don't like this example, but it's hard to tell from the one picture.

Totally agree. The car just looks dirty.

Is this paint or a wrap? Maybe the wrap material isn't the greatest.

What do they use for matte black?

This is kind of what I was thinking of when I thought that matte had a slight shine to it.

I was thinking that flat would be completely dull.

i don't think you could get it completely dull? i mean there is a clear coat so it's gotta have at least some small amount of sheen, yeah?

I love the "satin" look. I painted my bike frame in Corvette yellow with a clear coat, very shiny. I then dulled the sheen with fine steel wool. It came out with a satin finish and looked great. By the way, what is a "vinyl" finish?

WOW Vinyl would be the way to go, but that would be a HUGE gamble if it was real paint!!! SOmeone had WAY too much money. Resale would be a BIG gamble. but if its vinyl just peel it off and away you go.
