gt2 v gt3's
I used to own a 355 (Tubi exhaust, hyper-flow cats, and Tubi headers) and recently purchased a '04 GT3 (stock exhaust system). I can tell you that the car is every bit of fun that the 355 was and it sounds great from the factory. I started to lose faith in many of the modern Porsches before this car and now I'm on the list for the upcoming GT3RS. I tried to drive my 355 daily but the car would not let me (blew the headers, check engine lights, etc). The GT3 is as visceral as an F car only I can easily drive this car daily--as a matter of fact, I do! Good luck--I made the transition and I am very happy with my decision.
Hi Gang!
While I think the GT3's are great and would really like to own the NA 997RS I still would not trade my 03 GT2.
That said GMG has turned this car into a great street and track car
..........and you want sound! I have their WC-GT2 exhaust system and I love the sound. Every time I am at the track people comment on how good it sounds.
The car is not difficult to drive on the street or at the track. The suspension has been upgraded and GMG has the patent on setting up the GT2's as they also own one.
Yes you have to get use to passing GT3's
and closing on CUP cars but it just comes with the 550+HP that the GIAC softwear and other really minor mods GMG has made to the car. GMG does a great job of setting up the GT2's. They are really not that difficult to drive quick.
One word of caution: At California Speedway don't try and follow that CUP CAR you have been closing on into turn one or the ROVAL. I weights a few hundred pounds less
.
Have fun! Steve

forget the GT2 if u want loud.
I regret not waiting for the 997GT3, my 996 GT2 is a total useless piece of monster **** for the streets, its also too uncomfortable to be a blvd cruiser.
I only drive it when i really want to punish or scare myself, but if i drive it like a lunatic with no regards for others and myself on the road, then it rewards me with devilish ear to ear grins.
There's no tracks where i'm from, so i can only scare the locals on main streets or keep it as a garage queen.

First off, have you heard a straight piped GT2? It may not be the prettiest thing you've heard but its crazy loud! I mean as loud as a straight piped CGT, if not louder due to its extremely deep note. I would know.
Second, comfort is always subjective. I love the ride of the GT series cars. Feeling every bump makes me feel more connected to the road. And even just on the street, i love it! Some would even say the GT2 is too soft.
Third you're probably scaring yourself for one of two reasons...Actually it could be a combinatio of both. Either way...
1. low levels of experience with high powered RWD Porsches...most likely the case as you said there are no tracks around so you've never been able to safely learn the limits. Or...
2. your suspension may be all out of sorts. You'd be amazing at how planted the car can feel with a couple minor suspension upgrades (dog bones, toe links, etc...) Also alignment is very key with these cars, especially if you're going to be driving them fast. If you still have the factory alignment or something close to that the car is going to be extremely tricky.
In no way am i saying the GT2 is easy, rather, sorted correctly, driven with respect by an experienced driver and the GT2 can be one of the most rewarding street cars of all time.
There is nothing you can do to a 996 GT2 to get it to sound as good as a great GT3 exhaust. You can get it loud, but never the same engine note. When is comes to exhaust in this case NA > FI. The GT2 sound will always be muffled by turbos at high rpm. You get a great whooshing sound while cruising though, so it's a matter of opinion. But the WOT wail belongs to the GT3 hands down.
Overall speed, the GT2 is the fastest, but the scariest too. Unless you are tracking that is irrelevant, but in terms of being a pure monster, the GT2 is the one.
As for the driveability, the 997 GT3 is the best, though it's much softer and less hardcore than the 996's. A great blend of race car luxury if there is such a thing.
If you have a CS, get the GT2 or the 7 GT3, the 996 GT3 is too close to the CS.

To the original poster, hard decision, you saw my choice but my car is damn special, I have a feeling if it weren't a ruf car, na like throttle wise and sound wise , etc I would have moved onto a 997 gt3. Done right they are best of both worlds.
996 Gt2

My modded 03 GT2 with 750lbs. front & 900lbs. rear springs with JRZ-RS shocks rides great on the street while being very track capable. You really need to find the right balance with this car. Having gone from 996TT to GT3 to GT2 I find the 2 had the best combo for me. The properly set up 2 feels more like a turbo'd GT3 than a Turbo with Gt3 suspension given the associate weight and AWD. It will never quite feel the same as the GT3 given the different engine characteristics but will be faster in the right hands-and still very streetable. Both powerplants have very desirable traits. I have not been able to find an appropriate replacement for my GT2 but the 7-GT3RS would be closest for me.

Just a cautionary note that I would add. I don't know about the 997 GT3, but the 996 GT3 and the 997 GT3RS are not great for comfortable cruising. The 996 GT3 tends to tramline on the street, and the GT3RS is more of a track car than a grand touring car. A used 997 Turbo might be a good choice.

im happy u like ur set up, but my GT2 is in taiwan where i dont have the luxury of glass smooth roads or quality shops that i trust to do much suspension work. I like my GT2, but not as much as my 430, where i can just jump in and feel like a super star and my ironed guccis won't turn into hollisters when im done.
I dont know about you guys...but the 996 gt3 with bypass pipes is one hell of a contender in the sound department...Ill post a 140 mph or so flyby when I get the footage of when I was at Pocono last...but lets say among the ferrari's and lambos, I held my own. As far as driving dynamics...I havent ever had more fun with a car. A part of that reason is that the car is near stock (other than the bypass pipes, seats, harness' etc) and feels incredibly raw...
Gt3
+1. I had an 05 GT3 similarly set up to the one Sechsgang described but with LWFW and shorter ratio gears. It was the most fun to drive Porsche that I've driven to date. It sounded like a cupcar with the bypass pipes-although my GT2 is faster and scarier.
My GT2 pain is right here, where u said it, why cant it come from the factory like the 3 or like ur Ruf??!! Im still on the fence on mods like straight pipes, ecu flashes and stuff, but when newer, better, louder, and easier to go fast options are out there, my faith in the infamous uncomfortable widow maker is tarnished. Especially considering my stock example is all the power i can handle in my neck of the woods.
