Durability of the LSD plates
Durability of the LSD plates
I was looking through an old Excellence the other day and chanced upon a 6GT3 Buyer's Guide. The point which caught my eye was a statement that LSD plates only last about 10 track days. Really?
I am still looking for wheels before taking my 6 to the track, and am wondering if this is true. Are the LSD plates that high a wear item? Is there an easy way to check how worn they are? And if/when they do need replacing, how big a job is it, in terms of time and money? Can a shade tree mechanic manage it without a lift?
TIA

LSD wear really depends on driver style and the track...easy to test...jack up the rear...have someone hold one rear wheel and try to turn the other...if you feel resistance then the lsd is still working...
10 track days sounds a bit overstated. I have heard of guys rebuilding replacing but this car was built for the track and would expect a season anyway. symptoms include wheel spin coming out of a corner, and car dancing under heavy braking. the test above would be more helpful if you could test the resistance before and after. i saw a post some place that you could measure in with a T wrench it was so many ft lbs. of resistance.
Our Rolex car and our 997T project both run the current Porsche Motorsport Plate style diff... It does depend on your driving but they both run very strong without the need for rebuild. Our 997TT has about 50 track days on it and ~15k miles.
