Carrera GT Questions - Help Appreciated
Carrera GT Questions - Help Appreciated
Quick repost...
I have been looking at several Carrera GTs - there are a ton on the market right now and it is coming down to a GT, Scud, or maybe a great deal on a Stradale. I have searched the archives so I'll try not to ask the normal questions but I wanted to get some thoughts from current owners or previous owners that spent a lot of time with the car.
1. How is the car on semi-frequent use? Few times a week. What problems did you run into?
2. Clutch seems to run $15k or so... How about brake replacement costs for front and rear?
3. There are several higher mile cars out there but many people believe the car is pretty robust (german engineering)... How did the car age? Would you be concerned about a higher mile example?
4. How did the car wear? Most things seem to be solid with the only evidence I have seen being worn leather.
5. If anyone can comment... how would you compare the car to a Scuderia or even a Stradale?
6. Main issues that I have seen crop up include dead battery ($1000), clutch ($15-20k), and some had bad synchros requiring a transmission swap... anything else to look for?
7. Given your experience... would you be worried about a tracked car?
Any more comments on living with the car. What did you trade it for... what did you trade from... Thank you for your comments.

2. I've heard $25k for a clutch. Have not had to replace either clutch or brakes.
3. I've put almost 3000 miles on mine in 1.5 years. If you're going to be putting a lot of miles on the car anyway, if the car checks out I wouldn't be concerned about higher mileage.
4. So far, so good.
5. Never driven either Fcar.
6. Other than battery, nothing yet.
7. As long as it hasn't been abused.
8. I didn't trade into the CGT from anything and still have it. I just returned from Colorado for Porsche Parade and put about 650 miles on it in 3 days. The car performs incredibly and it's amazing how easy it is to drive. I let a friend drive it and he commented on the same thing. It's a big car and depending on what you've driven, the dimensions take some getting used to when parking and opening doors. Good luck!

I'm currently "out" of a CGT at the moment...........hopefully to be rectified soon. Very soon.
Anyways as for your questions.
1. Can't comment
2. I've heard as high as 22k for the clutch. A PPI including clutch measurement (in millimeters) is a must.
3. At first I only wanted a low mileage example. But after a thorough PPI including the "clutch" measurement I am confident that a car with higher mileage if not abused is a good buy at the "right" price.
4. Can't comment
5. I own both a Scud and a Stradale. They are incomparable in my opinion. As different as the Scud is to the Stradale.......the CGT is even moreso different then both of the Ferraris. First off, CGT only comes in manual transmission. That in itself makes it hard to compare, but that said, I believe the CGT is more in line with the "Supercars" in Ferraris lineup such as the F40/F50 and Enzo. Its that good. Its a car that is not easy to drive and drive well. There is a very steep learning curve and ultimate respect must be given at all times.
6. Not heard of the tranny issues, but battery issue is well known and if you keep it on a tender, then all should be well.
7. I personally would not go for a tracked car.......but thats just me. There are many CGTs out there with high miles. Most of them not in the USA I'm afraid. We're a lot more mileage sensitive in regards to our exotics then most other countries. Hopefully with the change in the marketplace, more people will be inclined not to see these things as investments and just enjoy them for what they are.

I owned a CGT and currently own a scuderia. Both great cars...as alluded to in early post the scuderia is much easier to drive. The CGT is a car that requires your attention 100% of the time. The only issue I had with my 05 was shifting between 1 and 2 when the car was cold. If you are going to drive the car a few times a week I would definitely consider the scuderia. That said, nothing looks or sounds as good as a CGT!!!
I have about 15k miles on mine right now. No problems so far. Drive it almost daily during summer.
Have to be careful with the clutch. You can burn it in 1k miles if you dont know how to use it. About a week ago under hard acceleration my clutch slipped. Drove it for a while, accelerated again, no slip. So not sure why that happened, but already saving up 25k just in case
Brakes are very expensive. I bought my car with 2k miles on it and front brakes were messed up as i found later (probably was driven into sand or something) but im still using them, although honestly should replace them asap. Rears are fine. Pads dont cost too much. So that isnt a problem.
Scuderia is a great car, but... CGT is CGT. Take a roof off, put some nice music on and just cruise along a boulevar. Its comfy, stereo is good, aircon is good etc. Then drop a few gears down and you are in a lemans racer. Scud just doesnt have near that kind of broad personality, but its a lot easier to drive.
I track my car a lot, hasnt given me any problems. But i change oil every 5k, always do heel and toe, careful to warm it up and cool it down, not drive into sand etc etc etc... If you dont drive it properly, you can have spoiled brakes, broken transmission, decreased engine life and god knows what else. So you have to be sure it was driven by an experienced and caring guy.
Dead battery isnt a problem. Mine died like 5 times already, just recharge it and go.
Go for it. Ive driven many cars and this one tops them all, including enzo. Two bad things about it - expensive clutch and repairs, and its very tricky to drive. Very. You'll drift gt3 with your little finger after you had several sessions in CGT in pouring rain

1. How is the car on semi-frequent use? Few times a week. What problems did you run into?
Should be no problem at all.
2. Clutch seems to run $15k or so... How about brake replacement costs for front and rear?
Around this price, my car is at 19k miles with original clutch at 25% worn. I know of another car in the UK with 40k miles on the original clutch so they are durable if used correctly. Brakes £2.5k per rotor. I swopped to System ST Carbon Ceramic rotors which are around £1.5k per corner and last many times longer than PCCB/SGL Carbon OE fitment
3. There are several higher mile cars out there but many people believe the car is pretty robust (german engineering)... How did the car age? Would you be concerned about a higher mile example?
Drives exactly as it did the day I got it, no deterioration whatsoever. Covered around 15 track days in 3 years.
4. How did the car wear? Most things seem to be solid with the only evidence I have seen being worn leather.
I treat the leather seats regularly, no wear on the drivers seat in mine.
5. If anyone can comment... how would you compare the car to a Scuderia or even a Stradale?
The CGT is superior in every respect.
6. Main issues that I have seen crop up include dead battery ($1000), clutch ($15-20k), and some had bad synchros requiring a transmission swap... anything else to look for?
Keep the battery charged through the glovebox connection when not using the car and it's fine. Not heard of any trans problems. On my car I've had new coil packs @ 8k miles, 3 new front radiatiors @ 15k miles, head gaskets replaced at 18.5 k miles.
7. Given your experience... would you be worried about a tracked car?
Not in the slightest, as long as you are a sympathetic driver the car will soak up what you can throw at it. I've even run mine on slicks on 18" wheels several times.

Without doubt one, if not the most amazing road car money can buy.
