Advice on radar detector
Sorry for my poor attempt at humor. It was in poor taste and not appropriate for this forum. Based on all of the helpful comments I am going to buy the Valentine instead of the Passport. Thank you all and Merry Christmas.
lasers are precise and usually instant on.

part of it is luck. you HOPE the laser was on another car before you, and your V1 pick up. you slow down.
for example, i live near hwy 280, i know the area well. they dont use laser. and near SFO lots of neon bill board emit laser. so if i am near SFO and laser warning goes on, i dont really care. i will take a chance. if my laser warning goes on with my V1 near my house on 280, i pull the parachute to slow down. basically you need a good detector and you have to be aware of your surrounding.
on hwy 5 northbound to thunderhill, if V1 goes off, slow down quick. it's not false alarm. i have seen chp hiding perpendicular to the fwy in the farms.... oh, sometimes the may be traveling opposite direction to you, but they will make u turn and get you.... they got me.

I have both V1 and seperate jammer in the GT3. Works fine; get hit, brake, turn off jammer, get hit at speed limit.
On a seperate note, I know someone who just did about 4000 mile last week in a truck and trailer at at least 15 miles and often 20-30 miles over the limit with just a V1. Either they did not have radar on, or V1 would catch it.

Mooty, if this is the case, how can V1 be thought of as superior. Obviously a combination unit which includes a jammer gives you a far better chance at avoiding a ticket, even for instant on laser. Not for instant on radar because radar units do not jam the signal. Laser will become more prevalent in the future I feel.

jammer, afaik, is not legal in CA (so the CHP told me when i had close encounter with him

That's a good thing as Allstate officially considers and GT3 and CL65 as "uninsurable unless you have pristine driving record and credit and have a 3rd car that is "insurable" ('01 Mustang GT).
Can the police detect jammers and radar detectors? I know a guy who kept ripping it off the windshield as he drove through states that had welcome signs saying "detectors illigal".

The new permanent mount hidden unit from Escort that I saw has shifter and front and rear antennas hidden in the bumpers with shifters visible to the trained eye.
The shifter has a button so it can be turned off quickly when speed is reduced. This would make it virtually unrecognizable to a unit trying to obtain speed from radar or laser. How it works in practice I will leave it to those who have used it.
This unit learns from location and will stop recognizing false signals after a certain length of time or when you tell it to. It also identifies hidden cameras and other traps with the use of GPS along with updatabel info from the web.

I've had the Valentine 1 for many years in every car and I love it. It works and works well. Is it the "best"? Who knows these days there's a lot out there but to me it's the purest of all of them...no extra fluffs, bells, whistles, etc. Just a great, well built detector.
i was just revisiting valentine one's website... just amazing what MV came up with and how it works.
i just noticed they do upgrades for older V1 detectors... not sure how much price may vary pending age/serial number, but mine is upgradable for 139 and shipping since i need the POP coverage upgrade...
