The GT3 is normally aspirated, so has better throttle response, and is almost as fast because it is lighter, but it's not as comfortable. The GT2 is the fastest, but because its heavier and turbo'd, you lose a bit of the purity and responsiveness of the experience from the GT3. And its quite a bit more expensive. If most people were asked to choose a car for the winding road or track, they would take the GT3 (RS) over the other two.

And your Z06 was not significantly, if at all, heavier than these cars. The Z06 is quite light, actually.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Porsche measure horsepower at the wheels and Chevy at the crank?

With PDK, the Corvette doesn't stand a chance against either the Turbo or the GT2 until well into triple digits in a straight line from what I've seen in recent tests.

Once you get bit by the Porsche bug, you'll find yourself wanting to collect several models as each has its own characteristics that make them great cars. I like the idea of passing a cool car along to the kids one day, but Im having a hard time imagining that these gas burners will even have a source of relatively cheap fuel in 20 years. If you want "drive in to the car show flash" go back to lambo or ferrari, they have that x factor that appeals to the masses and the maintenance on modern cars isn't all that bad. If you want bragging rights about being fastest car in town - buy an ariel atom or superbike. One trip to an ALMS race will make it clear that Porsche, Ferrari and Vette are all plenty fast - drive what you love and enjoy!

You seem to go wherever the wind takes you. Like pretty much everyone else is saying GO test drive them. Your opinion will definitely change.

I'm not a fan of the 997.2 TT, only because it does feel too soft and squishy. If I had the choice i'd get a used GT2.

First let me say, welcome aboard Mark. From the sounds of it, a Turbo or Turbo S may be the best suited to you since it has rear seats that your son can fit into. With the money you'd save over a GT2, you can do quite a bit of modding. You can do a tune and exhaust which will put you into GT2 category power wise and then you can mod the suspension with GT3/2 suspension pieces as well as JIC, Moton or PSS10 shocks to firm up the ride. Since you have such a short commute and this car will be mostly for fun, those are the type of mods that would probably suit you well and add to the sporting nature of the car. People talk about the turbo as if it's a pig on the track. It's actually a VERY capable car. However some people feel disconnected to the road and feel like it's going a lot slower than it is. The GT3 on the other hand is a lot more visceral. You feel every bump, you hear the engine revs and the steering is much more communicative through the steering wheel. These are things that you can get with a Turbo to an extent through mods, however even then it'll still have a different feel. Some (not all or even most) actually prefer it to the GT cars for it's Jekyl and Hyde ability to be very civil in town and quite a monster on the track. There's plenty of very fast Turbo's on the track, a simple Youtube search can show you what they're capable of. Good luck on your search, sounds like you've got plenty of time to do all the research required in making the right decision for yourself. Go to some Cars and Coffee type of events or join PCA and go their events to meet others with the cars that you're looking at, ask lots of questions including if they'd mind giving you a ride. Some may even offer to hand over the keys to you. Definitely test drive the turbo and if possible, the GT3/RS and a GT2. Since you're talking about almost 2 years away you've got plenty of time. Also, remember, searching and learning is part of the fun!

Although this thread started out a little shaky I think I would have to say thank you for all who did take the time to put their ideas, criticism, intellect, and information withinn it because it is helping me since I am trying to decide to go back to a 996TT or take the time to wait until 2012 to pick up a used 997TT or GT3. This thread helped me out since I drove an 08 Carrera and it was a great experience. Now to find the other two cars and test drive them, do some more research and make a good decision!!!!

Will do...been into cars for years and like I said had a 2002 996TT slightly modified so I am not totally new to this but certainly know more with the BMW's. I'll be surfin around gathering info, etc and make my decision when it is time. I hope that this thread grows a little more...ANY insight on personal experiences with the GT2, GT3, and TT will be helpful I am sure to the OP and myself.

Well...went to AtSpeed open house yesterday and spoke at length with many enthusiasts and the darn GT3 came out on top! I found a few guys who were even keen to the idea of DD it. I met a couple who are very well connected with Porsche in the area and I asked him if we could take his car for a spin. He did better...said that we'll meet up for lunch, he'll take me out in the car and then hand the keys over. I also am setting up a drive with the 997TT and so I think in a few weeks my mind will be made up and then the process of waiting, planning and finding the perfect car will begin. It wasn't fair to me though because Bruce has a basalt black on black with key options which made me want to steal his car! It was perfect.

More to follow

Mark,
Contact the Porsche Dealership in Chatt., they can get you in touch with the local PCA.
I traveled your roads about a month ago. Very few cars on beautiful 4 lanes and no cops = spirited driving.
They do have a white GT3 RS on the floor.
I am waiting for the tt.1 prices to come to me. May have to wait a while. Good luck.

Welcome to the world of the 911 Mark.

Currently Porsche has Twenty 911 models to choose from (21 incl. Sport Classic). I'm not sure how many models available there. Porsche seems to want to cater to all it's perceived 911 clienteles. From a basic Carrera to the extreme GT2RS. I have owned several Porsches through the years. ( 924, 968, 89' 911 Turbo Cab, 993 Carrera S, 06 Cayenne Turbo, Now a 997.2 GT3 and 09 Cayenne GTS) Once a 911 owner will always be a 911 owner.

I'm sure you would find a 911 that bests suits your budget, use and driving capability.

For me the current 911 Turbo S with PDK is the best all around 911 you could buy.
Fast ,comfortable ,relatively affordable, well optioned and a very good DD. A true all weather high performance 911.

But if you want to experience a true "PURE" 911 then go with the GT3/GT3RS. It is a hand full to drive daily with it's heavy clutch but rewards you with the best driving experience if used properly. You might even want to enroll in a good performance driving/racing school before purchasing a GT/GT3 to get the most out of the car.

As for the GT2, it is on the top of the range for a reason. It is the most extreme 911 available. Most expensive( when it came out), most powerful and most demanding to drive. Too extreme for some but coveted by most , especially the new GT2RS.
