Craig, if you are trying to compete with bigger power cars, you could upgrade your suspension on your Carrera, and get a much faster car. I have some mods on my car that allow me to get faster lap times then most cars, except for GT3's that are driven well. If you are hell bent on an upgrade, buy a 996 GT3, a lot of fun to drive, and are very fast for the money.

Nice list of mods, a GT3 will be faster, but I am surprised that you have an E55 as a car that you are having trouble running faster lap times then.

may be dangerous if you really broke, those track things tend to consume much more money than they will cost you initially....

why don`t you want to try 996 gt3 then? and i would keep nice clean street 997 car. track car is for track only, looking at my car now i can see why everybody say that constantly...

I wrote that wrong, I meant to say that those cars were there... I actually did really well and didn't get passed all day, but passed everyone I ran against except a 650hp turbo and a 500+ ho EVO with the dual clutch. Its not that I couldn't pass them either, it's just they started first and I started each race last so I passed everyone up to them, and then the race was over, so we will never know!! But what pissex me off is how much time people were making up in the straights!! I would blow by someone in the twisties and then once we hit the straights I could see them coming up in my rear, we'd hit the twists again and they would be gone again!

i do not think you maxed out your car. not even close.
you can still strip whole interior and bring down weight to 3000-2800lbs depending of budget, throw out JICs and replace them with proiper shocks and proper track springs, put in full cage to stiffen up body and then you`ll see if that car will not satisfy you.

really, all you get different from gt3 is more powerful motor, more reliable gearbox, but body and overall platform is stil same and it will handle if not the but really really close. and unless you are in the racing where it really matters to have baddest engine you can get to be competitive - what is the point? why do you think an RS car will make you a better driver? it got nothing new to what you already have.

and really, get good shocks. look at those if they are not sold yet:

The car is great in fact perfect in the corners, it's the straights that's killing me!
I don't want to strip it and full cage it and then find out it's not enough, it's not a street car anymore at all, and it's not a great track car, then what?

reality is that on straights will will always be beaten by cars that do have engines similar to yours but weight closer to 2K lbs. yours i assume is stock at close to 3400lbs, loaded?
i wish it could be simple but it is not - good fast track car should be purposely built, have full cage, etc. 'Street' car on a track will always be 'beaten', but, really, so what? if all you do are DEs (just as me right now) and do not race and do not care what class your car fits - what is the problem with those straights? so let them pass you, what is the big deal?

say, if you want one really fast car - look at ariel atom with V8 option, or just a regular one with turboed 300hp engine. it is a hell of a track car and you will not want to hear about 997 again. there are so many options out there as soon as you go with a dedicated car. what matters for most people is not even a car but with whom to compete - so they simply choose a car what fits. but if we speak of car`s limitations here - it is a totally different topic, IMHO.

I see where your coming from and I definitely understand. Its the battle I am facing right now!! I have a DD, but I cant bring myself to taking apart me 08 car solely for track purposes. I think its my only option right now...

Why sways always on full stiff, should be adjusted from track to track...Full stiff doesn't always equate to faster...

i dont have the knowledge or the ability to change them for each event. I set them on full stiff and go at it!

just keep your car and have fun.. no matter what you get there will always be a faster car and driver.

You have a great car with those mods and you already spent big $$$

Just keep driving it and loose as much weight as possible.

My car came alive when i took 300 lbs out!

Also I like the fact that my car is less powerful than GT3's and vette's and when i have a faster lap then them it puts a smile on my face.. thats what tracking is all about FUN!!!!!

Nice mods. I'd keep the car as the mods were well thought out and I'm sure you'll lose a lot of their $ values if you were to trade in. If straight line is the only issue, you should just get a supercharger. Also, you can get some light weight racing seats to save another 50+lb.

me neither.
what to get for track fun is one hell of a question. i have not yet figured it out neither. i tend to bend toward either cheaper version of ariel atom or a spec boxster, for now. not sure. it has to be light, modular, servicable, new engine+tranny for it should cost <$10K, etc. plus total tow weight should be under 3.5K lbs with a trailer. a lot of variables to consider.
