Why is this E46 CSL smoking GT3's one by one at the Ring?
 

I can across this on youtube. I know the M3 CSL is a great track car but god damn does that thing fly! Do you guys think the GT3's on the track that day were hot dogging?

Nothing is going to keep up that that car. That's amazingly fast and well controlled.

I would bet the driver of that CSL is a professional with lots of ring time. Hell if it was Sabine, most of us couldn't catch her with a GT2...

or catch her driving a diesel transit...

For those going 991 GT3, see how much sense SMG makes or in the case of the 991 PDK...

If you put a chimp in the ****pit of an F1 car and make him/her race against an average competent driver around a circuit; I'd bet on the competent driver 10 out of 10 times. Analogously, the M3 could be driven by a driver whose increased skill, respective to the GT3 drivers, nullifies any gains the mechanical advantage the GT3 has over the M3.

Saw that episode, was nuts, thought she was going to spill it a few times!

IMHO, considering the closing speeds witnessed, the fluidity of the driver's lines (including lack of major steering input corrections), the superior corner entry and exit speeds, and the general momentum displayed, this appears to me to be a very talented driver. The CSL is an excellent car on paper and from the reviews I've read, but I cannot imagine it is that superior to the RS and GT3s that he passed. Driver talent accounts for a great deal.

Those GT3's were on a Sunday drive. Looked like "Ring orientation day". Credit to the CSL driver, but come on.

As he was doing full laps and not to the ticket barrier it was a closed 'club' day not the normal 98% lap and park jobs you normally get.

I agree the driver was smooth and knew his way around.

Without knowing skill level of the drivers and modifications/tires on the various cars, it's useless to try to figure out why one car is faster than the others. However based on the closing speeds, the driver in the CSL was quite a bit superior to everyone else on the track that he encountered.
