The above video is something a member of the Walker family does not need to see online.

From the video, it looks like the car was coming apart before it hit the tree.

Shocked to hear this sad news. What a shame, he seemed like a decent guy. I enjoyed his films, just watched one recently on cable (Running Scared).

RIP, Paul (and Roger).

Losing control on a straight boulevard, during the broad daylight. What was the x-factor here?? A street race gone wrong, possibly?

CGT is notorious for punishing a driver and breaking traction if they are not judicious with their throttle application - even in a straight line.

From what I know about the CGT (never driven one), it is a beast that can be difficult to tame - even in a straight line.

Race cars by definition have full roll cages, multi-point harnesses and HANS. In a bad crash, the latter-two are what make the all the difference (i.e., prevent the deadly whiplash or windshield impact). No chassis or body construction, whether carbon fiber, steel, titanium, whatever is going to solve that problem.

That said, if the car catches fire, that's a different story (racecar drivers of course wear firesuits too).

How hard is it to drive the Carrera GT to drive near the limit? If you watch the TopGear review, the Stig (the Stig for chrissakes!!) spins it multiple times while attempting laps on a baby smooth racetrack he knows by heart.

I think the further we go into the future, as we get used to modern sports cars that are easier and easier to drive very fast, cars like the Carrera GT will pose more and more risk for the average (well-heeled) enthusiast that isn't used to its high-powered but analogue performance.

So sad..... As a two time CGT owner (presently have 7k miles on my second one) and someone who races a Porsche Factory race car - a few observations - the CGT is a very tricky car to drive - even at 5/10ths - In fact, I sold my first one after seeing the aftermath of crashes and hearing how they occurred back in 2004..... More important, this guy may have raced cars or done track events but we need to be careful when assessing whether someone is a race car driver (as opposed to someone that drives races cars) - Walter Rohrl can go past the limits and bring a CGT back - some other rare folks too.... going fast or speeding in a CGT on the street - is really reckless - and doing in with a passenger is even more catastrophic..... so very sad
