CGT seats in 997GT3 for US. Yes or No?
Many say the CGT seats won't be available for US 997 GT3's because they aren't DOT certified, but if they came standard on the US CGT's then why couldn't they be available for the 3?

There answer is no, but I'm not sure why. Perhaps because the closer proximity of the back wall of the CGT's cockpit to the seat and the car's rollbar like structure above the occupants' heads offers enough protection if the seat breaks in a collision.

Airbag laws changed. That is why there were no 2006 CGTs and why the CGT seats aren't legal for sale in the 997GT3. I would bet, like the "old GT3 euro" seats, the new GT3/CGT seats will become readily available for retrofit...

As far as the retrofit, if it has a part #, you can order it and put it in your car. |
It has to do with the advanced airbag regs that went into effect in 2006- sensors in the seats to adjust the force of the airbag deployment depending on the passenger size, among other things.
Same thing affected the F430, but Ferrari petitioned the gov't, arguing that the basis of the F430 was designed in the early 90s (as the 360) and thus it would cost the company undue financial hardship to renengineer the entire car to meet the 2006 regs. I think the whole issue has to do with a combination of sensors in the seats, airbags in the seats, external airbag shut off switches, as well as (possibly a seperate but related issue) side impact protection of the body of the car and how it relates to "children and small women" in frontal and side impacts. |
