Redline Speed Worx (RSW) HRE Huracan Wheelset

Who puts smaller wheels on a performance car?

Sometimes…. WE DO!

In the realm of aftermarket wheels and tires, most people agree that bigger is better. Whether it’s wider tires, or 20 inch wheels, there has been a progression towards bigger rolling stock every year.

For some vehicles this is a blessing, where there stock 15 or 16 inch units are replaced with sporty looking 17 or 18 inch alloys. The cars look better and the performance can even improve with wider rubber. With wheels of this size there is still plenty of sidewall on the tire to soak up bumps along the road, but once you start getting into the larger wheel and tire sizes (18,19,20,2x..) the ride quality is significantly compromised by the lack of sidewall.

Our current case study is a 2014 Lamborghini Huracan…...

Now I know you’re thinking why on earth would they be putting smaller wheels on a Lamborghini but, this is a perfect example of why sometimes a smaller wheel and tire package makes more sense. Luckily with HRE, any wheel and tire combination that will physically fit is able to be produced, and knowing HRE it will not only look killer but be as light as possible whilst being robust enough to drive on everyday.

Buying a Lamborghini Huracan is serious investment and trading it in for an All-Road wasn’t an option. The owner came to us and asked “What can I do to this thing to make it more fun to drive?” “I want to be able to take this out on the roads and not worry about every single bump and pebble, what can we do to this car to make it more enjoyable?” This made us think about how we should solve this problem.

Well we thought, we explored suspension options, we explored tire options, we investigated how much extra room there was in the wheel wells and came up with our suggestion: “ Let’s put some smaller wheels on there, reduce unsprung weight, add some compliance with a bigger sidewall and see how it goes!”

Needless to say our customer at first was greatly concerned with ruining the look of his Hypercar with some sized down aftermarket wheels. There was a period of time between ordering the wheels and installing them where each of us here at RSW was wondering the same thing; “Would it look silly? Will the fender gap be too big? How will it ride? Will the 1 inch be a big enough difference for the customer to feel it? Will the car handle properly with the reduced diameter?”

After a few weeks of nervous anticipation our partners over at HRE Wheels to custom machined this set to our specifications, we can safely say this change of wheels and tire answered all of our concerns.

The finished Product:

The car now is much smoother over small bumps, the customer reports that over large bumps he feels the car settles faster noting the reduction in weight making the car feel more planted.

We can’t wait to see what’s in store next for this beast, but for now it’s time to drop it off back at the owner’s residence in PA in our Trailer!
