"When the diesel Macan does go on sale here—we’re betting it’ll be around the start of 2015—it will slot below the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6–powered Macan S as the entry model and should undercut its $51,095 price by a few thousand dollars. While the turbocharged gas four-cylinder would have made a fitting base Macan, we suspect Porsche is wary of stepping on the toes of corporate-cousin Audi, which earns the bulk of its Q5 sales with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. Directing price-sensitive Macan buyers to the diesel model will also help Porsche boost the company’s average fuel economy in the face of stricter standards."
